Safety signs speak in shapes and colours. Blue circles tell you to do something, red circles tell you not to, green boxes show you the way out. A yellow triangle with a black border and a black symbol means one thing: take care, there's a hazard here. Under the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, an employer has to put up a safety sign wherever a risk remains after everything else has been done to remove or control it. Warning sign printing is how you cover that leftover risk.
Warning sign printing for the places hazards hide
Where vehicles and people mix
Caution Fork Lift Trucks, reversing vehicles, moving vehicles, forklifts at a blind corner, and a sign for areas where electric vehicles operate. For loading bays, yards, retail parks and busy stockroom doors.
Floors, steps, heads and heat
Caution Trip Hazard, slippery surface in caution and danger versions, an ice warning, beware of step, mind your head, hot surface and hot water signs. Think café kitchens, school corridors, old pubs with low beams and hotel plant rooms.
Keep out
Hazard area do not enter, hazardous area no admittance, arc welding no admittance, and a plant room door to be kept locked. A handful of specialist ones too, like laser beam, non-ionising radiation and pinch point.
Caution or danger?
Most designs say Caution. A few, like Danger Slippery Surface and Danger Very Hot Water, use Danger for a more serious message. Let your risk assessment decide which before you place any warning sign printing order. A tap that runs scalding at a care home hand basin is a different story from a warm radiator in an office.
Material and size in warning sign printing
- 3mm Foamex: indoor walls and doors.
- 3mm Dibond aluminium composite: yards, loading bays and anywhere outdoors. An ice warning in a car park belongs on this.
- Self-adhesive vinyl: straight onto a machine guard, a door or a smooth panel.
Every design is printed full colour on one side. Most come in A4 (210 × 297 mm), A3 (297 × 420 mm), A2 (420 × 594 mm) and A1 (594 × 841 mm); a few restricted-area signs are long strips from 200 × 50 mm to 297 × 100 mm. Roughly, A4 reads at 8 m, A3 at 12 m, A2 at 17 m and A1 at 24 m. A door or a machine suits A4. The entrance to a forklift aisle deserves A2 or A1 so people have time to react. Live prices are in the size table near the top of the page.
Custom warning sign printing
The stock designs use recognised symbols, such as the forklift and slippery surface pictograms, and each product page shows the symbol code. Leave them as they are; that's what makes them instantly understood. For your own warning text, keep a plain bold typeface on the yellow background. A common rule of thumb in the sign trade is about 25 mm of capital letter height for every 3 metres of viewing distance. Upload a print-ready file, use the free online designer, or book our paid artwork service. A real person checks every uploaded file for free. See the artwork guidelines, or get a quote for unusual wording.
Timing, delivery and more reading
Each product page shows its own production days. All warning sign printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page. The safety sign colours and shapes guide explains the system behind warning sign printing, the Foamex, Dibond or Correx guide helps with the board, and warehouse signs and electrical safety signs sit alongside.
Warning Signs: questions answered
What do warning signs look like?
Black picture, yellow background, triangle shape with a black edge. Yellow means take care, there is a hazard here. That design is fixed by UK regulations dating from 1996, while the pictures follow ISO 7010.
When should I choose Caution rather than Danger?
Both belong to the warning family. Caution suits everyday hazards like a slippery step or forklifts nearby. Danger is kept for the more serious risks, such as scalding water or an area only trained staff should enter. Let your risk assessment decide which applies.
Which sign warns about forklifts in our yard?
Two general forklift warnings carry the W014 symbol: one names fork lift trucks and the other covers moving vehicles in general. For a corner where people and forklifts could meet without warning, there is a separate blind corner sign. Go for A2 or A1 when it must be seen from a distance.
How big does a warning sign need to be?
Roughly, A4 can be read from 8 m, A3 from 12 m, A2 from 17 m and A1 from 24 m. Pick a size readable from the spot where people first come towards the hazard, and go one size up in dim light.
Can warning signs go outdoors?
Yes, when printed on 3mm Dibond, which stays flat through wet winters and hot summers. Think icy path warnings, yard traffic signs and the outside door of a plant room. Keep Foamex and vinyl mainly for walls, doors and equipment indoors.
