Blue means do it
Red circles say stop. Yellow triangles say watch out. Blue circles say you must. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 set out that format for mandatory signs: a white symbol or instruction on blue. The trick is putting the sign where the rule begins. A hard hat sign halfway across a site is too late. On the gate, it works.
The mandatory sign printing range
Protective kit
Wear Safety Helmet (ISO 7010 M014) for the site entrance, Stop Safety Glasses Required (M004) for the door to the machine shop, Beard Snoods Must Be Worn for the food production line, and All Visitors Must Wear Personal Protective Equipment for reception. For marking helmets, cabinets and small areas, PPE Mandatory Symbol Stickers come in self-adhesive vinyl at 50 × 50 mm, 100 × 100 mm or 150 × 150 mm.
Housekeeping
Keep This Area Clear (two versions, one adding "at all times"), Keep This Area Tidy at All Times, Keep Your Work Area Tidy, If You Use It Clean It, If You Drop It If You Spill It, Mop Up Spills Quickly, Keep to Walkways, Lift Correctly and Report Accidents Immediately. Nobody has drawn a pictogram for "tidy up", so mandatory sign printing for housekeeping relies on plain words in the same blue style.
Everyday manners
Please Ring for Attention on the counter, Please Turn Off the Light When You Leave, Please Keep Off the Grass, and Ensure Doors and Windows Are Closed When Not in Use. Please Knock Before Entering is a slim door sign in 200 × 50 mm, 250 × 75 mm or 297 × 100 mm.
Three materials, three kinds of spot
Every design in our mandatory sign printing range is printed in full colour on one side. Indoors on a wall, door or partition, go for 3mm Foamex: light, rigid, easy to fix. Outside on a gate or a fence, go for 3mm Dibond aluminium composite, which keeps flat through the weather and never rusts. On a machine guard, a glass panel or a smooth door, self-adhesive vinyl just sticks on.
Sizes for mandatory sign printing
Most signs come in A4 (210 × 297 mm), A3 (297 × 420 mm), A2 (420 × 594 mm) and A1 (594 × 841 mm). Live prices are in the size table near the top of the page. Rough reading distances: 8 m for A4, 12 m for A3, 17 m for A2, 24 m for A1. So a stockroom door seen from the corridor gets by with the smallest, and a gate seen by drivers turning in off the road wants one of the two biggest.
Custom wording
Need a rule we don't stock? Custom mandatory sign printing works best with a short, positive instruction ("must be worn" beats "don't forget"), white letters on blue, heavy type. Set the file at 300 dpi with 3 mm bleed as the artwork guidelines explain, then upload a print-ready file, make one in the free online designer, or use our paid artwork service. A real person checks every uploaded file for free. For something unusual, get a quote.
Timing and delivery
Each product page shows its own production days. All mandatory sign printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. The delivery page has the details.
Pair a round of mandatory sign printing with prohibition signs, warehouse and stock signs or kitchen and machinery signs. The safety sign colours and ISO 7010 guide explains the codes.
Mandatory Signs: questions answered
How do I recognise a mandatory sign?
It is a solid blue disc carrying a white picture or white words. Blue means this is something you have to do, such as putting on goggles or a hard hat. UK regulations from 1996 fix that style, which is why it looks the same from one site to the next.
Where should our hard hat sign go?
At the point where the rule begins, for instance the entrance to the yard or the door of the work zone, and large enough that people can read it while walking towards it. Our helmet sign carries symbol M014 and is sold from A4 up to A1.
Do you do PPE stickers as well as full signs?
We do. The PPE symbol stickers are a product of their own, sized for tools, lockers and small areas. Their turnaround is listed on their own page and differs slightly from the rigid and vinyl signs here.
Why is a sign like Keep This Area Clear shown in blue?
It gives an instruction people must follow, so it uses the blue mandatory style. Most housekeeping rules have no ISO 7010 symbol, which is why these are clear wording signs. Your risk assessment and your own procedures decide where they are needed.
