Overview

Perfect bound booklet printing makes something that looks like a proper book on a shelf, not a leaflet. That is the whole point. A photographer's portfolio, a wholesaler's product catalogue, a charity's annual report, a poet's first collection: all of them feel more serious with a square back.

When to choose glue over staples

Stapled booklets top out at 48 pages. Past that, glue binding takes over, and this range starts at 40 pages so there is some overlap. If your page count sits between 40 and 48, pick glue for the shelf look and staples if it needs to lie open on a table. One more thing: a glued spine does not open fully flat, so keep important text away from the inner edge.

Perfect bound booklet printing options

  • Size. A6 portrait, DL portrait, a 148 × 148 mm square, A5 portrait or landscape, a 210 × 210 mm square, and A4 portrait (210 × 297 mm) or landscape.
  • Pages. 40 to 88, in steps of four. The count means printed sides.
  • Inside paper. 90gsm smooth white takes a pen, handy for a journal or a workbook. 130gsm and 170gsm silk suit photos and catalogues.
  • Cover. 250gsm or 300gsm silk.
  • Cover lamination. None, matt, gloss or soft touch on the outside. Soft touch has a velvety feel that makes a portfolio nice to hold.

Artwork and timing

Send one PDF, single pages in reading order (not spreads), with 3 mm bleed and the page count you picked. A person checks every uploaded file for free. The artwork guidelines explain bleed, and our paid artwork service includes 1 design and 2 rounds of changes if you want a hand.

Order 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 or 1,000 copies. Books are made to order and dispatched from the UK: Express from 3 working days, Standard from 4 and Saver from 5, once your order and artwork are confirmed.

Delivery

UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts; see delivery for other areas. Stapled and wire bound options sit next to perfect bound booklet printing in booklets and brochures.

Questions

Quick answers about perfect bound booklet printing.

What is the turnaround on my perfect bound booklet order?

Express gets it out in 3 working days, Standard ships after 4 working days and Saver, the lowest price, after 5 working days. The clock starts once your order is placed and the file is confirmed. Mainland UK delivery adds £7.95 to the basket, and nothing once the goods reach £100 after any discount code. Highlands mainland addresses add £10; Northern Ireland and the islands are quoted first.

How do I set up the file for my perfect bound booklet order?

Supply one PDF of single pages in reading order, not spreads, with 3 mm bleed on every edge and the page count you ordered. Keep text off the spine edge, because a little of every page disappears into the glue.

Does a person look at my perfect bound booklet artwork?

Yes. Before your perfect bound booklet goes to print, someone checks resolution, size, bleed and the page count. Paid help is there too: a clean layout from your text and logo (£15), a design from your brief (£35) or a logo redraw (£30), each with one first draft and two rounds of changes.

Should our club yearbook be perfect bound or stapled?

Perfect bound gives a square, flat spine with the pages glued into the cover, just like a paperback. Stapled, or saddle stitched, booklets are folded sheets held by staples, and suit fewer pages.

What page counts can I choose for a perfect bound booklet?

From 40 pages up to 88, going up in fours. Count every printed side, not each sheet of paper, so a 40 page booklet is 20 sheets printed on both sides.

Which finish should go on the booklet cover?

Matt looks flat and soft, gloss adds shine and livens up colours, and soft touch feels velvety. Each is applied to the outside of the cover, or you can skip lamination altogether.

What paper should I choose for the inside pages?

90gsm smooth white is uncoated, so it suits pages of text and anything people will write on. For a mix of words and pictures, choose 130gsm silk. 170gsm silk is thicker and gives photo-heavy pages more weight.

Asked by buyers

How much will Perfect Bound Booklets set me back?

£115.29 is where Perfect Bound Booklets start, set up as A6 · 105 × 148 mm, 40 pages and 90gsm smooth white paper on the Saver speed. Change the size, material, extras, quantity or speed and the total on the page moves straight away. The price you see is the price you pay at checkout, with delivery the only thing that can be added. Delivery anywhere on the UK mainland is £7.95 an order, and it costs nothing once the goods come to £100 or more after any discount code (design and artwork fees are not counted).

Is delivery ever free?

It is £7.95 for the whole order, not per item, and free once the goods reach £100 after any discount code; design or artwork charges are left out of that £100. At £115.29 the opening price is already over £100, so mainland delivery costs nothing. A mainland Highlands postcode puts a single £10 on the order. Northern Ireland has its delivery priced before you pay, and so do the Channel Islands, the Scottish islands, Scilly, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man.

If I buy Perfect Bound Booklets today, when will they leave you?

As the page first opens, the speeds for Perfect Bound Booklets are Express 3 working days, Standard 4 and Saver 5, counting Monday to Friday and skipping bank holidays. The count begins once we have your order and a file ready to print. A bigger size or a different material can move it by a day either way; each speed shows its own days as you choose. Tracking arrives by email on the day it ships, and the courier usually takes one to three working days from there.

How do I put the pages together in one file for these booklets?

Send a single PDF with each page kept separate, running in the order people read them, with 3 mm of bleed. The page count goes up in fours, because each folded sheet gives four sides, so build any blank or notes pages into your total. Hold text 5 mm or more away from the spine and the trimmed edges. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

I cannot design at all. Can someone make the artwork for me?

Yes. When you choose the Artwork option you can pick from: send your own finished file (no charge), we set your words and logo on a tidy layout, called typesetting (£15), we design it from your brief (£35), we redraw a blurry or low quality logo as sharp vector art (£30) or we create a brand new logo (£50). Each fee is fixed, sits as its own line in your basket and covers every item on that line. Typesetting and design from a brief each come with one first draft and two rounds of changes. For these booklets, the material can be 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper.

Which is the smallest and which the biggest booklet I can order here?

Smallest: A6 (105 × 148 mm), from £115.29. Biggest: A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), from £170.63. 6 more are listed in between, each priced on the cheapest options. Not sure which? Mark the space out with tape or string first and stand back to look.

Could the total go up after I reach the checkout?

The only thing that can join the goods price is delivery; the price you see is the price you pay at checkout. Delivery anywhere on the UK mainland is £7.95 an order, and it costs nothing once the goods come to £100 or more after any discount code (design and artwork fees are not counted). If you pick a paid design option, it sits in the basket as a separate line with its own fee, so every penny is listed before you pay. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you. Before delivery, these booklets cost from £115.29.

How much for the biggest size, A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm)?

From £170.63 for 25, with the cheapest settings and the Saver service. That clears the £100 mark on its own, so UK mainland delivery costs nothing. Select it on the page and swap materials, finishes and speed to watch how the figure moves. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you.

Is there a minimum quantity for these booklets?

The smallest order is 25 and the largest listed is 1000; the list starts 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000. The price on the page covers every item in that quantity. To compare two quantities fairly, split each total by its number. A bigger run than the list allows can be priced separately on our Get a quote page. Before delivery, these booklets cost from £115.29.

How much does an A5 landscape (210 × 148 mm) booklet cost?

From £133.74 for 25, with the cheapest settings and the Saver service. That clears the £100 mark on its own, so UK mainland delivery costs nothing. Select it on the page and swap materials, finishes and speed to watch how the figure moves. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

Is there a quicker turnaround for these booklets?

Work back from the day you need them. Express takes 3 working days to get Perfect Bound Booklets out, against 5 on Saver, and costs £133.49 on the opening option rather than £115.29. Add up to three working days for the courier, plus any time you need to finish the file. Cutting it fine? Put your date in the question box before you order.

I live in the Scottish Highlands. Will Perfect Bound Booklets cost more to send?

The whole UK is covered. Outside it, sadly, we cannot deliver. Mainland addresses in the Highlands pay one extra £10 on the order, even when delivery would otherwise be free. For Northern Ireland, and for the Channel Islands, the Scottish islands, Scilly, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man, we tell you the delivery cost before you pay, so message us your postcode on the Contact page or our Get a quote page. Choose Saver and these booklets leave us after 5 working days; Express brings that down to 3.

Our wording is not finished yet. Can I still pay now and send it later?

Yes. Pay now and add the file afterwards: uploading after ordering is allowed, so you do not have to wait for the final version. If a volunteer, friend or designer is preparing it, they can send the finished file to you to upload, or get in touch through our Contact page quoting your order number. Nothing goes to print until the file arrives and has been checked, so if there is a date to hit, get the artwork over as soon as you can. Make the artwork for these booklets the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

How many pixels does a photo need to print well on these booklets?

Roughly 3,508 pixels across and 2,480 down for an A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm) design, which is 300 dpi. Things read at arm's length need that 300 dpi at full size to stay crisp. Text and logos are safest as vector art, which never goes fuzzy. Pictures saved from a website or social media are nearly always too small, and our file check will point out any that could print blurred. Make the artwork for these booklets the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

Will anyone look at my file before it is printed?

Every file gets a human check for size, bleed and resolution, and we contact you about any problem before printing. Nobody can know your details better than you, so double-check names, numbers and dates: we print what is supplied, and work begins once the order and file are confirmed. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

I am not a designer. What if the file I send turns out to be unusable?

You will not be left guessing. Each uploaded file is opened and looked over by a member of the team, and problems such as low-resolution pictures, no bleed or the wrong page size are sent back to you to fix before printing. If fixing it sounds like a chore, choose typesetting for £15: we lay out your text and logo, show you a first draft, then make up to two rounds of changes. For these booklets, the material can be 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper.

Which file formats can I upload?

A PDF made at the size you ordered works best, with the fonts embedded or turned into outlines. AI, EPS and SVG are fine too, as are high resolution JPG, PNG or TIFF images. Word, PowerPoint or Canva designs can be used, but save them out as a full quality PDF where you can. Attach up to 3 files of up to 25 MB each on the product page, or order first and send them afterwards; we email you a link. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

How do I pick the right cover lamination for Perfect Bound Booklets?

The cover lamination option has 4 settings: soft touch, outside of cover; gloss, outside of cover; matt, outside of cover; or none. Laminating the cover keeps the outside clean and stops it scuffing as it gets passed around. Switch between them on the page and the total updates straight away, so you can see what each one adds. For these booklets, the material can be 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper.

Does the paper option I choose make a difference to Perfect Bound Booklets?

The gsm figure is the weight of the paper in grams for each square metre, so a bigger number means a thicker, firmer sheet. Silk and gloss have a coating that keeps print sharp and bright, while uncoated sheets take a pen more easily. For Perfect Bound Booklets the list runs 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper. Try each one on the page: the figure changes as you click, so the cost of every choice is clear.

Cover on Perfect Bound Booklets: how do the choices differ?

The cover option has 2 settings: 300gsm silk cover or 250gsm silk cover. Self cover means the cover is the same paper as the pages inside. A thicker card cover gives the booklet a firmer, more solid feel in the hand. Switch between them on the page and the total updates straight away, so you can see what each one adds. For these booklets, the material can be 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper.

How many pages can I choose for Perfect Bound Booklets?

In short, the pages line for Perfect Bound Booklets reads: 40 to 88, in steps of four. Anything unusual in mind? Send the details through our quote form and someone will reply. The Specifications tab lists every other detail. A tape measure and a quick sketch of the spot will settle most size questions in a couple of minutes.

Which pages would you suggest for Perfect Bound Booklets?

Pages go up in fours, and the cover counts towards the total, because one sheet folded down the middle gives four pages. For Perfect Bound Booklets the list runs 76 pages, 72 pages, 68 pages, 64 pages, 60 pages, 56 pages, 52 pages, 48 pages, 44 pages or 40 pages, and 3 others. Try each one on the page: the figure changes as you click, so the cost of every choice is clear.

Should I get Perfect Bound Booklets, or would Saddle Stitched Booklets suit me better?

Set Perfect Bound Booklets beside Saddle Stitched Booklets and a few things differ. Opening price: £115.29 on this page and £105.06 on the other. Go by the spot it is going in and how long it needs to last, then open both pages and compare the live totals.

Which cards do you take, and is paying online safe?

You pay by debit or credit card when you check out, and you can do it as a guest without making an account. Card details are handled by Stripe, a specialist payment company, so the full card number never reaches us or sits on our system. Printing starts after payment goes through and your file has been checked. If your group needs a price agreed before anyone pays, ask for a quote instead. Before delivery, these booklets cost from £115.29.

Our treasurer needs a receipt for the accounts. What do we get?

Every order gets a confirmation email listing what was bought, the options chosen and the amount paid, and a club, school or small firm can file that as its record of payment. What you pay for these booklets is the price shown on the page plus any delivery charge, nothing more. If your accounts need a particular kind of invoice, ask through the Contact page before you order and we will tell you what we can provide. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you. Before delivery, these booklets cost from £115.29.

We need a few different designs. Do they each need their own order?

One checkout covers the lot. Add a basket line for every design, attach the right file to each, then pay once. You pay a single delivery charge of £7.95 for the whole order, or nothing if the goods add up to £100 or more. Repeating one design on another line? Choose the artwork choice that points to a file already in the basket, and no second design fee is charged. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

Next year we will want the same booklet again. Is reordering easy?

Yes. Treat it as a fresh order of the same item with the same settings, and attach the file you used last time. Keep a copy of the print file in a shared folder so whoever orders next year can find it. Change any details that have moved on, such as a new email address or this year's date, before uploading. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

Do I have to register before I can buy?

No. Guest checkout is fine, and card payments go through Stripe, so a debit card or a credit card both work. If you choose to open an account while checking out, My Account keeps your past orders. Guest or not, you get an email confirming the order and another with tracking once it is sent. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you.

Can a volunteer order without setting up an account?

Yes. There is a guest checkout, so a one-off order does not need a login. Payment is by debit or credit card, processed by Stripe. The confirmation email that follows lists everything bought and what was paid, which helps when you claim the money back from the group. What the page shows is what the group pays, plus any delivery. Before delivery, these booklets cost from £115.29.

Can I swap my file once I have paid?

It depends on timing. Until production begins, a new file can replace the old one, or the order can be cancelled with a full refund; once it has begun, nothing can be changed. Message us straight away on the Contact page with your order number. Items printed exactly as supplied or designed do not count as faulty, so check names, numbers and dates first. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

Can I send these booklets back if I no longer need them?

Not for a change of mind. These booklets are made for your order, and goods made to your specification fall outside the 14-day cancellation right (reg. 28(1)(b) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013). You can still cancel and get all your money back before production begins. Anything faulty, damaged or wrong is covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and we reprint it or refund you. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you.

Who looks after me once I have bought Perfect Bound Booklets?

You deal with FatPrint the whole way through. Once you order, somebody checks the artwork, Perfect Bound Booklets are printed specially for your order, and a courier delivers them with a tracking link by email. Need to ask something along the way? Use the question box here or the Contact page and a real person answers.

I am not sure which options to pick for these booklets. Can someone advise me?

Of course. Tell us three things: where these booklets will go, whether it is for one day or for years, and your deadline. Send that through the question box on this page or the Contact page, and a member of the team will suggest options. If what you need is outside the options listed, the Get a quote page lets you describe it and get a price. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you.

The parcel turned up damaged. How do I sort it out?

Look everything over when it arrives. If something is damaged or missing, contact us within 48 hours through the contact form, with your order number and photos of both the item and the packaging. Please keep hold of it until we reply; we then sort out a reprint or a refund. Your legal rights stay the same, as the returns page sets out. Before delivery, these booklets cost from £115.29.

I have never ordered printing before. Do I need to know the technical words?

No. A person on our team checks every file for size, bleed and resolution and tells you in plain words if anything needs changing. Or pick typesetting for £15 and we lay out your words and logo for you, with a first draft and two rounds of changes. Sizes for these booklets go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A4 landscape (297 × 210 mm), 8 in all.

I am a parent volunteer with no design experience. Can I still order these booklets?

Yes. You do not need design software to get a good result. If you would rather hand it over, typesetting costs £15: send the words and a logo, and we set them out neatly, with one first draft and two rounds of changes. Either way, get someone else to read the names, dates and numbers before it goes to print. For these booklets, the material can be 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper.

Will my logo colours come out the same as on screen?

Very close, but not always identical. A screen glows, print reflects light, so a small difference is normal. Sending CMYK artwork keeps it nearest; RGB is changed to CMYK before printing and the brightest greens, blues and oranges can look a touch flatter. For an exact brand colour, give us the Pantone reference and we get as close as the material allows. For these booklets, the material can be 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper.

Can these booklets go in the recycling bin afterwards?

Plain paper and card without lamination go in with ordinary paper recycling, so once the event, offer or year is over they can go in the paper bin at home or work. Lamination, foil and plastic make recycling harder, and rules vary from one council to the next, so check what yours accepts before binning those. For these booklets, the material can be 170gsm silk, 130gsm silk or 90gsm smooth white paper. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each booklet is made to order for you.
