Why printed feather flags work

A sign on a wall stays still, and the eye skips past it. A flag moves. Even a light breeze sets it swaying, and that movement pulls heads round from across a car park or a busy road. The long, thin shape suits one or two bold words: OPEN, SALE, CAR WASH, a café name, a club crest and a word under it.

Market traders stick one by the stall so regulars can find them in the crowd. Garden centres line the drive with them in spring. Sports clubs put a pair either side of the gate on match day.

Pick your height

Printed feather flags come in four heights. Think about how far away your reader will be.

• 2.6 m, about 8 ft 6 in (2600 mm): shop fronts, pavements, indoor events and stalls.
• 3.2 m, about 10 ft 6 in (3200 mm): seen over parked cars and a queue of people. See the Feather Flag 3.2m.

Bases: match the ground, not the flag

You can order printed feather flags with a standard or budget ground spike, a small or large cross base, a small square base, a small or large water base, a concrete base, a drive-on car base, or no base at all if you already have one.

• Grass or a school field: a ground spike.
• Paving, tarmac or a car park: a water base.
• Shop floor or exhibition hall: a cross or square base.
• Forecourt: a drive-on base, held down by a car wheel.

The 4.9 m flag only comes with the heavier options: large cross, large water, concrete, drive-on or the standard ground spike. Spare and replacement bases are on the flag bases page. Whatever you choose, bring flags in when the wind gets properly wild.

One side or two?

A single sided flag still shows the design on the back, only as a mirror image, so words read backwards. If people walk or drive past from both directions, go double sided and your printed feather flags read the right way from both.

Designing for a tall, thin shape

Printed feather flags give you a long, narrow canvas, so design for that shape rather than shrinking a poster onto it.

• Run the words up the flag, bottom to top, and stop at three.
• Leave the pole edge clear, because the sleeve wraps round the pole there.
• The top curves and narrows, so keep logos below it.
• Big, chunky letters beat thin fonts. People read these from a moving car.

All four heights take 6 working days as standard, 4 on express and 8 on saver, counted from when your order and artwork are confirmed. Everything is made to order and dispatched from the UK.

UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. Items over 3 m on any side add £15.
