Why flag printing beats a flat sign outside
Movement. A board screwed to a wall turns into part of the furniture after a week. A flag sways in the smallest breeze, and heads turn towards it from across a car park. That is the whole case for flag printing: it gets you noticed by people who were not looking for you. A car wash on a busy road. A garden centre drive in April. A Saturday market in the drizzle. A football club gate on tournament day. Put it out in the morning, bring it in at night, and do it all again tomorrow.
Three shapes, and which one is yours
- You have one or two big words: Feather Flags. Tall and narrow with a curved top, ideal for OPEN, CAR WASH or a café name.
- Your spot catches the wind: Teardrop Flags. The rounded shape keeps its outline in a light breeze, so the message stays readable.
- Your logo is wide: Crest Flags give extra room at the top for a badge or wordmark.
- You already own flags: Flag Bases are sold on their own, base only, with no flag.
Each shape also has its own section, so you can browse every height side by side: feather flags, teardrop flags and crest flags. All flag printing here is full colour, on one side or both.
Heights for custom flag printing
- Feather: 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in), 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in), 4 m (13 ft 1 in) and 4.9 m (16 ft 1 in).
- Teardrop: 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in), 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in), 3.5 m (11 ft 6 in) and 4.6 m (15 ft 1 in).
- Crest: 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in), 4 m (13 ft 1 in) and 4.9 m (16 ft 1 in).
Rule of thumb: the shorter heights suit a shop door, a pavement or an indoor event, where people walk past close by. The taller ones earn their keep on a forecourt or a roadside, where people are driving and need to spot you over parked cars. The size table near the top of the page shows live prices for each height.
Bases: match the ground, not the flag
The base is the bit people forget until the flag is lying flat on the pavement. Choose by surface. Ground spikes (standard or budget) go into grass. A small or large cross base, or a small square base, suits indoor floors and hard ground. Small and large water bases sit on paving and car parks. There is also a concrete base, and a drive-on base that tucks under a car wheel, which is handy on a forecourt. Already got one? Choose no base. Some bases are not offered on the tallest flags, so check the options for your height.
Artwork tips for flag printing
- Keep words and logos away from the pole edge, where the fabric wraps round the pole.
- Fewer words, bigger letters. A flag is always moving, so a short message wins.
- A single sided flag shows a mirror image on the back. Pick double sided if the reverse has to read the right way round.
- Vector logos and CMYK colours give the most predictable result.

Flag printing times and delivery
Flags and bases take 6 working days on standard, express from 4 and saver 8, counted from when your order and artwork are confirmed. Every order for flag printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. Items over 3 m on any side add £15. The delivery page has the details, and for an odd quantity or a special job you can ask for a quote.
Flags: questions answered
Feather, teardrop or crest: which flag suits our cafe?
It depends on what you want to show. A feather flag is tall and slim, great for one word or a short phrase. A teardrop holds its rounded shape in a light breeze. A crest has a wide top that gives a logo room to breathe. All three print in full colour.
What base do I need to stand a flag up?
On grass, a ground spike. On indoor floors and hard ground, a cross or square base. On paving and car parks, a water base, or a drive-on plate held down by a car tyre. The tallest flags have fewer base options, so check what your height offers.
Is it worth paying for a double sided flag?
If people pass on both sides, yes. With single sided print the back shows the design reversed. Double sided print reads correctly from either direction, which matters on roadsides and open sites.
Should flags stay out when it is very windy?
No. Bring them in during strong winds to protect the pole and the print. They are designed to go out and come in quickly, so taking them inside overnight and in bad weather helps them last much longer.
Does the flag price change at checkout?
Only delivery gets added. The price on the flag's product page, with the base and height you picked, is what you pay for the goods, and the delivery line appears separately before you confirm.
