Envelopes (envelopes printing)

Before they even open it

The doormat test is brutal. A plain white envelope next to a pizza menu and a gas bill gets opened last, if at all. One with your logo in the corner tells the reader it's the school, the club, the accountant or the landlord, and it goes to the top of the pile. A return address printed on it also means post that can't be delivered finds its way back to you instead of vanishing. That's the quiet case for envelopes printing.

Envelopes printing: size first

  • DL (220 × 110 mm): an A4 letter folded in three, DL leaflets and compliment slips. The everyday invoice envelope.
  • C5 (229 × 162 mm): A4 folded in half, or A5 leaflets and booklets flat.
  • C4 (324 × 229 mm): A4 flat and unfolded, for certificates, reports and anything that shouldn't be creased.

Everything runs through one product, Printed Envelopes. Live prices for popular options are in the size table near the top of the page.

Envelopes printing with or without a window

Most invoicing and accounts software prints the customer's address on the letter itself. If yours does, pick a window envelope and skip writing addresses altogether. If you handwrite addresses or use labels, go without a window.

Paper, seal and print options

The paper is white, in 90gsm or 100gsm; 100gsm feels a little firmer in the hand. Every envelope is self seal, with a peel-off strip over the glue, so nobody's licking 2,000 flaps at the kitchen table before the school newsletter goes out.

Envelopes printing comes in four combinations:

  • Black on the front: a clean logo and return address.
  • Full colour on the front: your proper brand colours.
  • Black on the front and back.
  • Full colour on the front and back, handy for a return address on the flap side or a short message on the back.

Quantities are 500, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 or 10,000.

Artwork for envelopes printing

These envelopes are made first and printed afterwards, so your design sits inside a printable area rather than running off the edges. Keep everything clear of the window, the edges and the seams. Send a print-ready PDF at the envelope size. A logo top left and a return address in small, plain type is all most people need. Upload a print-ready file, use the free online designer, or book our paid artwork service (typesetting from your text, full design from a brief, or a logo redraw), which includes 1 design and 2 rounds of changes. A real person checks every uploaded file for free. See the artwork guidelines.

Envelopes printing times and delivery

Each product page shows its own production days. Envelopes come in standard and express only; there's no saver option. All envelopes printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page. Fill them with letterheads and compliment slips or DL flyers and leaflets, and for an unusual quantity, get a quote.

Envelopes: questions answered

Which envelope takes an A4 letter?

It depends how you fold it. Folded into three, A4 slips into a DL envelope, 220 by 110 mm. Folded once, it fits a C5. Sent flat, with no fold at all, it needs a C4.

Can the print go right to the edge of the envelope?

No. The envelopes are already made up when we print them, so your design has to sit inside a printable area, clear of the edges and seams. Keep logos and return addresses away from the window, too.

Should our church office choose window envelopes?

Only if your letters already have the address printed where the window will sit, as many invoices and statements do. If you write addresses by hand or use sticky labels, plain envelopes without a window make more sense.

What is the smallest number of envelopes I can order?

The smallest run is 500. After that you can choose 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000 or 10,000, printed in black or in full colour, on the front only or on both sides.

Can someone check my envelope artwork?

Yes. A person checks every uploaded file for resolution, size and bleed. No artwork? Paid typesetting will set out your logo and return address for you. Paid design includes one first draft and two rounds of changes.

How long do printed envelopes take to arrive?

Each product page shows its turnaround in working days until the job leaves us, counted from artwork confirmation. Delivery to the UK mainland is £7.95, free once goods reach £100 after discounts. Mainland Scottish Highlands add £10, and islands and Northern Ireland get a quote.
