The three questions to ask first
Is it going through letterboxes or sitting on a counter?
Door drops get handled once and binned or kept within seconds, so flyers and leaflet printing for letterboxes usually means light paper at 130gsm to 170gsm, which also keeps the bundle manageable on a Saturday round. A flyer that sits by a till for a month, or goes in a takeaway bag, wants card: 350gsm silk feels like a postcard, and laminated card shrugs off greasy fingers.
One message or several?
One offer, one event, one menu: a flyer. A full list of services, opening times for three sites, or a map and a timetable: a leaflet, folded so each panel has one job.
How should it feel?
Gloss is bright and punchy. Silk is smoother and easier to read under lights. Uncoated feels natural and takes a pen, handy for a voucher someone fills in. Kraft and recycled stocks say "independent" before anyone reads a word.

Send a print-ready PDF at finished size with 3 mm bleed all round, and keep words 3 mm inside the trim. For folded leaflets, supply flat artwork at the open size with the panels in the order they'll fold. Flyers & Leaflets: questions answered
Is a flyer the same as a leaflet?
Not quite. Flyers are a single unfolded sheet with print on one or both faces. Leaflets get folded, so a half fold gives you 4 pages and a Z fold or roll fold gives 6, which leaves room for far more detail.
What paper weight is best for flyers through letterboxes?
For big door-to-door drops, stick to the lighter weights, 130 to 170gsm, which are cheaper to print and post through doors easily. At 250gsm the sheet feels sturdier. The heaviest silk cards, 350 and 450gsm, feel like a postcard and suit flyers left on a counter or tucked into a goody bag.
How big is an A5 flyer?
Half an A4 sheet, so 148 by 210 mm. The smaller A6 is 105 by 148 mm, and DL, which is long and thin at 99 by 210 mm, drops neatly into a DL envelope.
How should I set up a folded leaflet file?
Send it as one flat page at the unfolded size, panels arranged in the order they will fold, with 3 mm bleed all round. The artwork guidelines show the panel layout for every kind of fold.
