Why a sign beats a laminated sheet of paper
Every busy kitchen has one: a curling A4 printout taped to the wall by the peeler, splashed with gravy, half the words gone. Nobody reads it. A proper printed sign, fixed where the operator's eyes land, stays readable after months of steam and wiping.
There's a legal angle too. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 expect suitable warnings and instructions to go with work equipment. Your own risk assessment tells you which machines need a sign. Kitchen safety sign printing is simply the neat, lasting way to put that instruction in place.
Kitchen safety sign printing: the five designs
- Caution This Machine Runs Hot: yellow triangle, the W017 hot surface symbol from ISO 7010. Think fryer, griddle, bain-marie.
- Convector Oven Switch Off Heater: a switch-off reminder for that particular oven.
- Potato Chipping Machine: safe-use instructions for whoever is feeding the chipper.
- Vegetable Paring Machine: the same idea, for the spud peeler.
- Dangerous Machine Procedure: a danger sign that lays out the procedure for a hazardous machine.
Which material for which spot
With kitchen safety sign printing, each sign is printed in full colour on one side, on the material you pick.
- Self-adhesive vinyl: sticks straight onto stainless steel panels, machine housings and tiled walls. No drilling into your splashback.
- 3mm Foamex: a light rigid board for the wall beside the equipment.
- 3mm Dibond aluminium composite: the toughest of the three, dead flat, with no rotting or rusting. A good shout for a cold store or a wet prep room.
On a machine that gets hot, fix the sign on a cooler panel nearby or on the wall beside it, never on the hot surface itself.
Sizes for kitchen safety sign printing
All five come in A4 (210 × 297 mm), A3 (297 × 420 mm), A2 (420 × 594 mm) and A1 (594 × 841 mm). Live prices are in the size table near the top of the page. Machine instructions are read from arm's length, so A4 is usually right and reads at about 8 m. Go A3, readable at about 12 m, or bigger when the sign must be seen from the kitchen door or across a canteen.
Fixing it where it works
- Eye level, where the operator stands. Not above the extraction hood.
- Away from direct heat and the worst of the steam.
- One sign per machine, so nobody has to guess which rule goes with which kit.
Have your own safe operating steps for a different machine? Send the wording and we'll quote a custom sign through get a quote. For custom kitchen safety sign printing, write numbered steps, one short line each, in a heavy font. Files should be 300 dpi with 3 mm bleed, as the artwork guidelines explain. A real person checks every uploaded file for free.
Timing, delivery and the rest of the kitchen
Each product page shows its own production days. All kitchen safety sign printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page.
Finishing the kitchen? Try warning signs for hot water and spills, mandatory signs, washroom and hygiene signs and electrical safety signs. The safety sign colours and ISO 7010 guide explains what the shapes mean, handy before your next round of kitchen safety sign printing.
Kitchen and Machinery Signs: questions answered
Do the machines in our cafe kitchen need warning signs?
The 1998 work equipment regulations, often shortened to PUWER, expect suitable warnings and instructions on equipment used at work. A sign on or beside the machine keeps the key rule in front of whoever is using it. Which machines need one is something your risk assessment will show.
What kitchen machine signs can I choose from?
There are five. One warns that a machine runs hot, one reminds staff to switch off a convector oven heater, two cover potato chippers and vegetable parers, and one sets out a procedure for dangerous machines. If your kit needs different wording, send it to us for a custom quote.
Which sign will stick to a stainless steel machine?
Self-adhesive vinyl grips stainless steel and other smooth panels. Choose a spot that stays cool, or a panel alongside, never a surface that heats up. For the wall next to the equipment, Foamex or Dibond both work well.
How big should a sign on a kitchen machine be?
Machine instructions are read from arm's length, so A4, readable from around 8 m, is normally plenty. Go for A3 or bigger if staff need to read it from across the kitchen or from the doorway.
