Fire Safety Signs (fire safety sign printing)

Three questions before fire safety sign printing

Do I actually need them?

In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 says escape routes and exits must be marked with signs. How many, and where, comes from your fire risk assessment. So the flat above the chip shop, the church hall and the ten-desk office all end up needing some, just in different numbers.

Green or red?

Green means escape. Red means fire equipment. Every sign in this range falls into one of the two, and each uses a registered ISO 7010 symbol, so people recognise it without reading a word. The safety sign colours, shapes and ISO 7010 guide explains the system.

Which arrow do I pick?

The one that points the way a person should walk from where the sign is fixed. Stand at the spot, face the route, and choose the matching direction. Walk the whole route before ordering and count every turn, because each change of direction needs its own sign.

The fire safety sign printing range

  • Getting out: six HTM 65 running man arrows (down, diagonal left down, diagonal left up, diagonal right down, diagonal right up, and right arrow up), plus the Delayed Egress Emergency Exit Sign for doors that release after a short delay.
  • Once you are out: the Fire Assembly Point Sign for the car park or yard, and the Keep Clear Refuge Point Sign for a safe waiting area.
  • Kit people must find fast: the Fire Alarm Call Point Sign, a Fire Alarm Call Point (Polish and English) Sign for bilingual teams, and the Wheeled Fire Extinguisher Sign.

Board or sticker

Every design in our fire safety sign printing range is printed in full colour on one side. 3mm Foamex is a light, rigid PVC foam board for corridors, stairwells and doors. 3mm Dibond aluminium composite stays flat outdoors, which makes it the pick for an assembly point on a post in the rain. Self-adhesive vinyl sticks straight onto a smooth door or wall with no screws.

Sizes for fire safety sign printing

Exit and delayed egress signs are landscape: 297 × 100 mm, 420 × 150 mm or 594 × 200 mm. Assembly point, call point, extinguisher and refuge signs come in A4 (210 × 297 mm), A3 (297 × 420 mm), A2 (420 × 594 mm) and A1 (594 × 841 mm). Live prices are in the size table near the top of the page.

Rough guide: the smallest exit sign suits a short corridor, the largest a long one or an open-plan floor. An A1 assembly point sign can be seen across a car park, while an A4 call point sign is fine right beside the red box.

Putting them up

Good fire safety sign printing is wasted if the sign ends up in the wrong spot.

  • Fix exit signs where they can be seen from anywhere on the route, not hidden behind an open door.
  • Fix each call point and extinguisher sign directly above or beside the kit.
  • Put assembly point signs at head height or on a post, away from parked vans.

Fire Safety Signs: questions answered

Do I have to put up fire exit signs in our community hall?

For premises in England and Wales, the Fire Safety Order of 2005 says escape routes and exits must be marked with signs. Your assessment of fire risks for the building sets out which routes and doors need them and exactly where along the way out they should be fixed.

Is a sign needed beside a fire extinguisher?

Firefighting equipment signs are covered by the 1996 Safety Signs and Signals Regulations and are shown as a red square or oblong. Whether you need one is for your fire assessment to decide. We offer a sign for a wheeled extinguisher using symbol F001.

How do I pick the right arrow on an exit sign?

Match the arrow to the direction people have to walk from where that sign hangs. The HTM 65 running man designs offer straight down, up and to the right, and each of the four diagonals, so every turn along the escape route can be shown.

How big should our fire exit signs be?

The landscape exit signs come in three widths, from about 300 mm up to about 600 mm, which can be read from roughly 4, 6 and 8 m. Pick the size someone could read from the spot furthest away where they would start searching for the exit.

Our assembly point is in the car park. What should the sign be made of?

Outdoors, most people pick 3mm Dibond, because it keeps flat and handles weather for years. If your muster point is inside the building, Foamex or self-adhesive vinyl is perfectly good.
