Warning Signs: questions answered

What do warning signs look like?

Black picture, yellow background, triangle shape with a black edge. Yellow means take care, there is a hazard here. That design is fixed by UK regulations dating from 1996, while the pictures follow ISO 7010.

When should I choose Caution rather than Danger?

Both belong to the warning family. Caution suits everyday hazards like a slippery step or forklifts nearby. Danger is kept for the more serious risks, such as scalding water or an area only trained staff should enter. Let your risk assessment decide which applies.

Which sign warns about forklifts in our yard?

Two general forklift warnings carry the W014 symbol: one names fork lift trucks and the other covers moving vehicles in general. For a corner where people and forklifts could meet without warning, there is a separate blind corner sign. Go for A2 or A1 when it must be seen from a distance.

How big does a warning sign need to be?

Roughly, A4 can be read from 8 m, A3 from 12 m, A2 from 17 m and A1 from 24 m. Pick a size readable from the spot where people first come towards the hazard, and go one size up in dim light.

Can warning signs go outdoors?

Yes, when printed on 3mm Dibond, which stays flat through wet winters and hot summers. Think icy path warnings, yard traffic signs and the outside door of a plant room. Keep Foamex and vinyl mainly for walls, doors and equipment indoors.
