Walk it as a stranger
Stand at the gate and pretend it's your first visit. Where's the office? Which way is the compound? Is that track for people or for dumpers? Every place you'd pause is a place that needs an arrow. Jot them down as you walk, count them up, and you've got your site directional sign printing list before the kettle's boiled.
Site directional sign printing, sorted by job
Getting to the cabin and the compound
Office arrows come in three directions: left, right and straight on. There's a plain Site Office Sign for the cabin door itself. Compound arrows follow the same three-way pattern. Each direction is a separate product, so order by junction rather than by total.
Walking routes and closed paths
Pedestrian arrows mark the safe way through. If the public pavement is shut, the Footpath Closed Sign, or the version that points walkers to the other side, does the talking, backed up by diversion arrows showing the way round.
Signing in
Three notices tell visitors, drivers and subbies to check in at the office first. One on the gate and another at the first fork is usually enough.
Gates and the practical bits
Entrance, access, works access and works-traffic-only notices sort out who uses which gate, and a no-site-access sign shuts the ones nobody should use. Water point and keep-clean signs look after the welfare side.
Which board?
Routes shift as the build moves on, so most site directional sign printing goes onto 3.5mm Correx. It weighs next to nothing, doesn't mind rain, and ties to a Heras panel in seconds, then unties just as fast when the scaffold comes down and the path changes. 3mm Foamex gives a smooth finish on doors and walls inside cabins. 3mm Dibond aluminium composite earns its keep at a depot or yard with a permanent layout, where it'll outlast the lot.
Sizes: feet or wheels?
Every design in our site directional sign printing range is landscape: A3 (420 × 297 mm), A2 (594 × 420 mm) or A1 (841 × 594 mm). Live prices are in the size table near the top of the page. Someone on foot is close and slow, so A3 works on walkways and cabin doors. A driver is further back and moving, so anything aimed at vehicles, like a works-traffic notice on the gate, wants A2 or A1. Mixing sizes on one job is normal.
Naming your own plots and blocks
The stock designs need no artwork, but site directional sign printing also covers one-offs. For a custom arrow to Plot 14 or Block C, keep it to a handful of words and a single arrow in a heavy, plain font. On rigid board, set 3 mm bleed and keep words 10 mm inside the cut. Upload a print-ready file, use the free online designer, or book our paid artwork service; a real person checks every uploaded file for free. File help is in the artwork guidelines.
Timing and delivery
Each product page shows its own production days. All site directional sign printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK, so order the next phase of arrows a little before the route changes. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page.
The rest of the site kit
Arrows get people to the office; site traffic signs keep them in one piece at crossings. Site safety boards set the rules at the gate, site waste signs label the skips, and construction site signs cover hazards. Planning site directional sign printing for several jobs? Get a quote.
Site Directional Signs: questions answered
Why would a building site need direction signs?
People new to your site, whether a courier, a subcontractor or a visiting client, need leading from the entrance to the site office and along the routes that are safe to walk or drive. Direction signs also flag shut footpaths and diversions, so members of the public keep well clear of the work.
Do arrows come pointing in different directions?
Yes. The signs for the site office, compound, pedestrians and diversions are each sold three ways: arrow up, arrow left and arrow right, as separate products. Construction traffic signs come with a left or right arrow, or without one.
Which sign tells visitors to sign in at the office?
You have a few choices. Some tell all visitors to go to the site office, some add drivers to that instruction, and one is aimed at subcontractors. There is also a sign making clear that every driver and visitor must sign in, which works well on the gate.
How big do site arrows need to be?
It depends who is reading. Someone walking can read an A3 landscape arrow from roughly 12 metres. Drivers need more warning, so pick A2 landscape, readable at around 17 metres, or A1 at about 24, giving them time to slow and turn safely.
Can I have an arrow sign for Plot 12 or Block C?
Yes. The listed signs are fixed designs, but a custom one with your block, plot, gate or compound name can be quoted. Send us the words, the size and the board you want through the Get a quote page.
