Drivers pull off a 40 mph road into your car park and their right foot hasn't caught up yet. Meanwhile a toddler is wriggling out of a car seat two bays down. A big clear number at the entrance, repeated further in, is what bridges that gap. That's the job of speed limit sign printing: telling drivers, early and plainly, how fast this place allows.
Speed limit sign printing, by place
Car parks
Car park limits at 5 mph, 15 mph and 20 mph, and two versions that add a watch-for-children line, at 5 and 10 mph. Good for supermarkets, schools, surgeries and holiday parks.
Private roads, estates and yards
Plain 10 mph, 5 mph and 15 mph limits with no extra wording, for business parks, farm tracks and residential access roads.
Building sites
Caution-style site limits at 5, 10 and 15 mph, and a construction site warning capping speed at 5 mph. These sit on the haul road and at the site gate.
Blind corners, ramps and doorways
A Sound Horn Sign, versions that combine the horn with a speed or a pedestrian warning, a drive slowly sign, and one for speed ramps. Sound Horn is a mandatory instruction, so it tells drivers what they must do rather than warning them. Use it where drivers and people on foot can't see each other coming.
Which board?
Speed limit sign printing comes on three boards, and a speed sign often stays in the same spot for years. For a car park or a permanent yard, choose 3mm Dibond aluminium composite: flat, weatherproof, won't rot or rust, and happy screwed to a post or wall. 3.5mm Correx is the light, waterproof choice for temporary site roads and one-off events like a summer fete's field car park. 5mm Foamex is a stiff board for covered car parks and indoor loading areas.
Speed limit sign printing sizes
All designs are portrait: A3 (297 × 420 mm), A2 (420 × 594 mm) and A1 (594 × 841 mm), with live prices in the size table near the top of the page. At the entrance, where drivers are still at road speed, use A1 so the number registers early. Further in, where everyone's slowed down, A3 or A2 repeaters keep the message going without cluttering the place.
Picking the right number
There's no magic figure. A long access road with good sight lines can handle more than a tight car park where people walk between bumpers. On a building site, the limit should match the one in your traffic management plan, so the sign and the paperwork agree. If you're not sure, go lower, but keep it believable. Speed limit sign printing only earns its keep when drivers look at the road and think the number makes sense.
Custom limits and wording
The stock designs need no artwork. For a limit we don't list, or your company name under the number, send the wording for a quote. Keep the number the biggest thing on the sign with plenty of space around it, so a driver gets it in a glance. You can also upload a print-ready file, use the free online designer, or book our paid artwork service; a real person checks every uploaded file for free. See the artwork guidelines.
Timing and delivery
Each product page shows its own production days. All speed limit sign printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page.
Related signs
Car parks usually need car park signs for bays and exits too. Sites pair speed limit sign printing with site traffic signs for crossings and reversing, and fence lines take a large speed banner from the site safety banners range. The Foamex, Dibond or Correx guide helps with the board.
Speed Limit Signs: questions answered
Which speed limits do you have signs for?
Four limits, from 5 mph up to 20. Beyond plain limit signs you will find car park versions, versions warning drivers to watch for children, building site versions, and combined signs like a sound horn warning with a 5 mph limit. Need a different speed? Ask us for a custom quote.
What size of limit sign will drivers actually notice?
Think about how far off the car will be when the sign has to register. A3 is readable at about 12 metres, A2 at about 17 and A1 at about 24. Put the biggest at the entrance, then smaller repeaters along the road.
Our car park has a blind corner. What does the horn sign do?
It is a blue mandatory sign, so drivers must sound the horn there. It suits blind bends, doorways out of buildings and ramps, anywhere a driver and someone on foot cannot see each other coming. Some versions pair the horn with a 5 or 10 mph limit.
Can I use these speed signs on a building site?
Yes. There are site speed limit signs for 5, 10 and 15 mph, plus a construction site warning not to go above 5 mph. For fence lines, the 5 and 10 mph site messages are also sold as PVC or mesh banners.
The limit sign is for our church car park. What should it be made of?
If it is staying put, choose 3mm Dibond: flat in all weathers, no rot or rust, easy to screw onto a pole. For a temporary road or overflow event parking, 3.5mm Correx is cheaper, and 5mm Foamex works under cover.
