Door and Information Signs (door sign printing)

Door sign printing: which sign goes where

Before any door sign printing, do a lap of the building with a visitor's eyes. Every time you would stop and wonder, there is a sign that fixes it.

  • Doors people shouldn't open: Staff Only, Private and Authorised Personnel Only. Staff Only on a café kitchen door saves a lot of wandering customers.
  • Rooms people are looking for: Admin Office, Manager, Canteen and Lift.
  • Front of house: Entrance, Enquiries, Information and Opening Hours.
  • Access: Accessible Lift, Disabled Access and Hearing Loop Facility, so visitors who need them know they are there.
  • The yard and loading area: Deliveries, Collections, Bay Marking, Pedestrian Route, Pedestrian Traffic Only and an Arrow Left or Right sign.

Door sign printing is not a legal must in itself, but it saves a lot of "sorry, you can't come in here".

Plates and full-size signs

Door sign printing comes in two shapes. Room names and restricted doors come as slim landscape plates: 200 × 50 mm, 250 × 75 mm or 297 × 100 mm. Read from the corridor, they work at roughly 2 m, 3 m and 4 m, which is all an office door needs. Everything else comes in four portrait sizes from A4 to A1, priced live in the size table near the top of the page.

A4 is fine for an Opening Hours notice by the door. A Deliveries sign that a driver reads from the road wants A2 (about 17 m) or A1 (about 24 m).

Foamex, Dibond or vinyl

Door sign printing here is full colour on one side. 3mm Foamex is light and rigid, the usual choice for an internal door, stuck on with pads or screwed. 3mm Dibond aluminium composite is stiffer and stays flat in the weather, so use it for Entrance, Deliveries or Opening Hours on an outside wall. Self-adhesive vinyl sticks straight to glass and painted doors with no fixings. On a glass door, decide whether it goes on the inside or the outside before you order. Still unsure? The Foamex, Dibond or Correx guide explains the boards.

Placing them so people notice

Door plates go at eye height on the door itself or right beside the handle side of the frame, not over the top where nobody looks. Opening hours go by the entrance at a height a person can read without stepping back. Yard signs go where a driver makes the decision: the gate, the first turn, the loading bay door. A good rule is to put the sign where the question gets asked.

These are ready-made designs, so door sign printing from this range needs nothing from you. For your own opening times, your company name or a room name we don't stock, send the text and size through get a quote. Door and Information Signs: questions answered

Does the law say our office doors must have signs?

Ordinary room and direction signs are not legally required. They simply help visitors find the right room and keep private areas private. Safety signs, including fire exits, are a different matter, and your risk assessment is what tells you where those have to go.

What size door sign works for an office?

Slim room signs come in three widths, from 200 mm up to 297 mm, which can be read from roughly 2, 3 and 4 m. On most internal doors, one of the two bigger options does the job nicely.

Is Foamex a good material for a sign on a door?

It works well. Foamex is a light, stiff PVC foam board with a smooth face that prints cleanly, and it goes onto a door with sticky pads or screws. On an outside wall, choose Dibond instead, and on glass use self-adhesive vinyl.

Could you make one with our own words, like a room name?

Yes. Tell us the wording and the size and we will price it for you. Before you sign off the layout or upload artwork, read through names, spellings and times carefully, because the sign is printed exactly as supplied.
