Hazard Sign Printing
Hazard sign printing for the doors and corners where the risk is not obvious until it is too late: the battery charging bay, the chemical store, the asbestos-containing ceiling, the gas cage out the back, the tank you only enter with a permit. Pick the message that matches your risk assessment, then the size and the board: 3mm Foamex indoors, 3mm Dibond aluminium composite outdoors, or self-adhesive vinyl straight onto a cabinet.

The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 expect a sign wherever a real risk is still there after you have done everything else to control it. Alongside COSHH, that usually means marking stores and areas that hold hazardous substances, so nobody walks in without knowing. The sign is the last line, not the first: your risk assessment picks the messages.
Reading the colours and shapes
Hazard sign printing uses a simple visual language. A yellow triangle with a black border says "watch out". A red circle with a line through it says "don't". A blue circle says "you must". Several signs here pair two of those on one board. Battery Charging PPE and No Smoking, and Biological Hazard No Smoking, both carry the ISO 7010 P002 no smoking symbol next to their warning, and the battery charging warnings use W026. One combined sign can cover a door that needs two messages. The safety sign colours and shapes guide explains it fully.
Hazard sign printing by area
For hazard sign printing, think of the building room by room, and the right sign usually jumps out.
- Where the forklifts plug in: start with Caution Battery Charging, then add the acid, explosive gases or forklift versions if the bay needs them.
- The cupboard full of drums: Caution Chemical Store on the door, with Corrosive, Ammonia, Acid or Compressed Oxygen where a specific substance lives.
- Old buildings under refit: Caution Asbestos, a protective clothing version, and signs for keeping hazardous waste apart.
- Tanks, pits and sealed rooms: confined space signs for permit-only entry and no unauthorised access, plus asphyxiation and explosion warnings.
- The gas meter: a shut off valve keep clear sign, and a gas leak action notice beside it.
Sizes and materials
Every design in our hazard sign printing range is printed full colour on one side. 3mm Foamex is fine on a dry internal wall. 3mm Dibond aluminium composite is rigid and weatherproof for gas cages, compounds and outside plant room doors. Self-adhesive vinyl goes straight onto tanks, cabinets and doors. Most designs share four sizes, shown with live prices in the size table near the top of the page.
Danger Explosive Atmosphere No Admittance and Dangerous Chemicals No Admittance come as door strips instead, in 200 × 50 mm, 250 × 75 mm or 297 × 100 mm. For the rest, A4 reads from about 8 m and A3 about 12 m, fine for a store door. A charging bay seen across a warehouse wants A2 (about 17 m) or A1 (about 24 m).
Where to fix them
Hazard sign printing only helps if the sign is seen. Fix it at the entrance to the hazard, at eye level, where someone sees it before they open the door or step into the bay. Not behind the door, not above head height, not where a pallet will hide it on a busy day. For a cabinet, vinyl on the front beats a sign on the wall beside it.
Custom wording, timings and delivery
Keep registered symbols exactly as they are, so people recognise them straight away. Need a named substance we don't stock? Send the wording through get a quote, with vector text where possible, following the artwork guidelines. A real person checks every uploaded file for free.
For hazard sign printing from this range, signs are ready to dispatch 5 working days after your order and artwork are confirmed, made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10; Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page, and for related needs, electrical safety signs and recycling and waste signs.
Chemical and Hazard Signs: questions answered
We keep cleaning chemicals in a cupboard at our school. Does it need a sign?
Under COSHH and the 1996 Safety Signs and Signals Regulations, stores holding hazardous substances should be labelled so people understand the risk before they walk in. Your risk assessment sets which signs go where. The chemical store caution sign and the no admittance version for dangerous chemicals are popular picks.
What sign goes next to a battery charging point?
There are several. Two caution designs carry the W026 battery symbol from ISO 7010, one of them adding a warning about explosive gases. Another pairs PPE with the P002 no smoking symbol, and a separate design marks where forklift trucks are plugged in to charge. Match your pick to your risk assessment.
Is there a sign for asbestos?
Yes, a few. You can mark the area itself, remind people that protective clothing is required, or label hazardous asbestos waste, and a further sign tells staff to keep hazardous waste apart from everything else. Sizes run A4 up to A1 on Foamex, Dibond or self-adhesive vinyl.
Which signs cover a confined space like a tank or pit?
Two danger signs deal with confined spaces: one says entry is by permit only, the other bars unauthorised access. A third warns of asphyxiation where oxygen may run low. Fix them at every way in, so people read them before a hatch or door is opened.
Our gas cage is outdoors. Will the sign last out there?
Choose 3mm Dibond and it will. The board keeps flat and handles sun and rain on cages, compound fences and outside doors for years. On smooth metal cabinets or tanks, self-adhesive vinyl sticks straight onto the surface instead.
