CCTV sign printing: what the sign has to tell people
Before any CCTV sign printing, remember a camera sign is not just a deterrent. The Information Commissioner's Office expects organisations that record people to say so clearly, and to say who is responsible and how to get in touch. Its guidance on CCTV and video surveillance sets out the detail. That is why most designs here are write-on: a blank panel where you add the operator's name and a contact number.
Choosing between the designs
CCTV sign printing splits into three groups.
Write-on signs
For a shop, office, surgery or managed block. CCTV in Operation Write-On is the all-rounder. CCTV This Scheme Is Controlled by puts the operator front and centre. There are also versions for images being recorded, images being monitored, personal safety, "in this store", and cameras monitoring a site.
Plain signs
24 Hour CCTV in Operation and CCTV in Operation, for where the operator details are displayed elsewhere.
Perimeter and access
Caution Guard Dogs on Patrol, Caution Barbed Wire, Anti-Climb Product in Use and Be Aware This Is a Security Protected Area for fences, gates and roofs. Attention All Passes Must Be Shown, Escort Required Beyond This Point, Personal Search Ahead, Do Not Admit Strangers When Entering and Concealed Weapons Are Prohibited for doors and reception desks. Any Incidents of Theft Instant Dismissal is aimed at staff areas.
Colours, shapes and where to fix them
Warning signs follow the familiar yellow triangle; the guard dogs design uses the ISO 7010 W013 symbol, so people read it at a glance. The CCTV notices are information signs, meant to be read before someone walks into view of the camera. Fix them at the entrance to the covered area, at eye level, not above the camera where nobody looks. On a car park or yard gate seen from a moving car, go bigger.
Sizes, boards and vinyl
All CCTV sign printing is full colour on one side. Dibond is rigid aluminium composite, the one for outdoor walls, fences and gates. Foamex suits indoor walls and receptions. Vinyl sticks flat to a shop window or glass door. Most designs share four sizes, priced live in the size table near the top of the page.
As a guide, A4 (210 × 297 mm) reads from about 8 m, A3 (297 × 420 mm) about 12 m, A2 (420 × 594 mm) about 17 m and A1 (594 × 841 mm) about 24 m.
Filling in and custom wording
The designs are fixed, so CCTV sign printing needs no artwork from you. On write-on signs, use a permanent marker that suits the surface and write in clear capitals. Want your company name and number printed instead? Send the wording through get a quote. Custom files follow the artwork guidelines, and a real person checks every uploaded file for free.
Timings and delivery for CCTV sign printing
CCTV and security signs are ready to dispatch 5 working days after your order and artwork are confirmed. They are made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10; Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. More on the delivery page.
For a full set of premises signs, add prohibition signs, warning signs or door and information signs. The board guide helps with materials if CCTV sign printing is new to you.
CCTV and Security Signs: questions answered
We have just put cameras up at our shop. What does the sign need to say?
Guidance from the ICO on UK data protection law expects clear signs that tell people CCTV is running, who runs it and how to get in touch. Our write-on CCTV signs leave room to add those details. Read the ICO guidance to confirm what applies to you.
I have a doorbell camera at home. Should I put a sign up?
The ICO has separate guidance for householders who use CCTV, so start there for your own case. Rules aside, a sign lets callers and people walking past know they may be filmed. The signs in this range work just as well on a house as on a business.
Is there a minimum size for a CCTV notice?
The aim is that people can read it as they come into the recorded area. Ours run from A4 to A1. An A4 sign can be read from around 8 m, which is ideal on a door. At the way into a car park, or on gates people see from a distance, pick A2 or A1.
What does write-on mean on a CCTV sign?
It has a blank box printed into the design where you add details yourself, usually with a permanent pen. Most people fill in the name of whoever operates the cameras and a way to contact them. You get a standard design and still show the details your notice needs.
Our CCTV sign goes on an outside gate. Which material holds up?
For gates, fences and outside walls, pick 3mm Dibond, which keeps its shape through years of weather. If the sign is going on a glass shop door or window instead, self-adhesive vinyl sticks directly to the glass.
