Printing in Edinburgh for the Fringe #
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe puts shows into hundreds of venues, and every one of them is fighting for a passer-by’s attention. Performers want posters for every wall that allows them. Venues want a PVC banner over the door and an A-frame by the queue. Box offices like a roller banner they can wheel away at night.
Sort it before July gets going. In August you want to be rehearsing, not refreshing a tracking page.
Making a Fringe poster work #
Your show title and your face, big. The venue, the time and the dates, clear. Then stop. A poster fighting forty others on the same wall has about two seconds, so a single strong image beats a collage. Got a great quote from a critic? Fine, add it, but the title comes first.
Shows, conferences and rugby #
- EICC: the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, for delegates’ roller banners and stage backdrops.
- Royal Highland Show: every June out at Ingliston, by the airport. Outdoor stands want mesh banners and feather flags that cope with a breeze.
- Murrayfield: supporters’ banners and hospitality boards on match days.
Students and graduations #
Heriot-Watt, Napier and the University of Edinburgh all have societies that want freshers and open day banners. Proud parents order a graduation banner for the party afterwards. Fair enough, they paid for the gown hire.
Cafes, shops and old buildings #
Cafes and shops use A-frames, window posters and festival banners for summer events. Clubs and charities order banners for fun days and street collections. Much of the city centre is a conservation area, so read the council’s rules before fixing anything to an old frontage.
Families, clubs and the rest of the year #
Once the festival crowds go home, the city gets back to normal life. Rugby clubs want sponsor boards for the clubhouse. Schools want a banner for sports day. Families want a big one for a wedding anniversary or a new baby, hung off the garden fence for the neighbours to admire. A PVC banner with eyelets covers most of it, and a roller banner does the job indoors when there is nothing to tie to. Order online whenever suits you, and the courier does the rest.
Putting a banner up outside #
Outdoor advertising in Scotland has its own rules. Going on a wall, railings or beside a road? Check with the City of Edinburgh Council first.

Edinburgh orders: your questions
Does Edinburgh pay the normal mainland postage?
Yes. It is mainland Scotland, so £7.95 a parcel, and free once the order passes £100 after discounts. Only the islands get quoted, while mainland Highlands postcodes add £10.
When should Fringe performers order?
June or the start of July if you can manage it. Making time for each turnaround is on the product page and starts once we have a confirmed order plus usable artwork, then the courier needs one to three working days. August is not the month for cutting it fine.
Does FatPrint have a shop in Edinburgh?
No. FatPrint is an online print business with no shop or office in the city. Everything is made to order and leaves by tracked courier from within the UK.
What grabs attention outside a Fringe venue?
A PVC banner tied to the railings, plus an A-frame on the pavement if the venue is allowed one. Posters for windows and noticeboards fill the gaps.
Will you deliver to the Royal Highland Show or the EICC?
Yes, or anywhere else you choose. Both have their own goods-in slots and label rules, so copy them from the exhibitor pack into your checkout notes.
