The sign everyone looks for
Nobody reads your mission statement on the way in. They read the toilet sign, usually while doing a slightly anxious walk down a corridor. Get it right and nobody notices. Get it wrong and the till queue fills with people asking. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 expect employers to provide suitable toilets and washing facilities; clear door and direction signs are how people find them. Washroom sign printing covers that, plus the hygiene reminders once they're inside.
Washroom sign printing, sorted by job
On the door
Male, female, ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls toilets, and combined signs showing male, female and accessible together. Schools tend to want the boys and girls versions; a restaurant might prefer ladies and gentlemen.
Accessible and family
An Accessible Toilet Sign, disabled toilets, accessible male toilet, accessible toilet and baby changing, baby changing and baby care facilities. Parents with a buggy will thank you.
Pointing the way
Male and female arrow signs, left and right, plus a double sided directional sign for a corridor where people approach from both ends.
Once inside
Wash Your Hands Please, which uses the standard ISO 7010 mandatory symbol, now wash your hands, hand dryer, drinking water and do not flush sanitary products. There are also two washroom cleaning inspection signs, giving cleaners a place to record their checks in a busy public toilet.
Washroom sign printing materials: which goes where
- Self-adhesive vinyl: straight onto a toilet door, a mirror or tiles above a sink.
- 3mm Foamex: a light, rigid board for walls and doors indoors.
- 3mm Dibond aluminium composite: stays flat and won't rot or rust, so it suits an outdoor toilet block at a campsite, a sports club changing room or a park café.
Every sign is printed full colour.
Sizes for doors and walls
In washroom sign printing, door signs are square: 150 × 150 mm, 200 × 200 mm and 297 × 297 mm, reading at roughly 6 m, 8 m and 12 m. For a door plate at eye level, the smaller two are usually plenty. Hygiene reminders and cleaning record signs are portrait A4 (210 × 297 mm), A3 (297 × 420 mm) or A2 (420 × 594 mm). An A4 above a basin does the job; a big staff washroom or a school corridor can take A3 or A2. Live prices are in the size table near the top of the page.
Getting washroom sign printing consistent
Pick one set of wording and stick with it across the building, so the ladies sign on the ground floor matches the one upstairs. Mixed styles look like an afterthought. If you want your logo on the signs, or wording we don't stock, send a 300 dpi file with 3 mm bleed. You can upload a print-ready file, use the free online designer, or book our paid artwork service; a real person checks every uploaded file for free. See the artwork guidelines.
Timing, delivery and related signs
Each product page shows its own production days. All washroom sign printing is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page. Washroom sign printing often sits alongside door and information signs and kitchen and machinery signs, and the full safety signs range covers the rest of the building.
Washroom and Hygiene Signs: questions answered
Do we need toilet signs at our office?
Workplaces have to provide proper toilets and washing facilities under the 1992 welfare regulations. Good door and direction signs make them easy for staff and visitors to find, and show which ones are accessible or have baby changing.
How big should a toilet door sign be?
The square door signs come in 150, 200 and 297 mm, which can be read from roughly 6, 8 and 12 metres. Fixed at eye height on a normal door, one of the two smaller sizes usually looks right.
What material works best in a washroom?
On doors, tiles or mirrors, go for self-adhesive vinyl, which sticks directly on. For a wall, 3mm Foamex is light and stiff. Outdoor toilet blocks are best served by 3mm Dibond, which keeps flat and will not rot or corrode.
Is there a toilet sign printed on both sides?
Yes. The double sided toilets directional sign is meant for a corridor, so people coming from either end can see it. There are also single sided male and female toilet signs with left or right arrows for walls.
Do you have a hand washing sign with a symbol?
Yes. Two hand washing designs use the M011 symbol from ISO 7010 in the blue mandatory style, one simply asking people to wash their hands and the other saying now wash your hands. Both are sold from A4 to A2, on Foamex, Dibond or sticky-back vinyl.
