Safety Signs (safety sign printing)

Three questions to ask before safety sign printing

What is the risk?

Signs are the last line, not the first. In Great Britain the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 ask employers to use a sign where a risk is still there after other controls have been put in place. So your risk assessment, and your fire risk assessment for escape routes, is the shopping list. The boiler cupboard, the loading bay, the slippery step by the kitchen door: each one it flags may need a sign.

How far away will people be?

Allow roughly 25 mm of the sign's short edge for each metre of reading distance. That puts A4 (210 × 297 mm) at about 8 m, A3 (297 × 420 mm) at about 12 m, A2 (420 × 594 mm) at about 17 m and A1 (594 × 841 mm) at about 24 m. Dim light or fast-moving people? Go up a size. The size table near the top of the page shows live prices.

Where is it going?

A corridor wall, a yard fence and a fridge door each want something different. That decides the material for your safety sign printing, covered further down.

Shapes and colours in safety sign printing

You know the type of sign before you read a word. Red ring with a slash through it: don't. Solid blue disc with a white pictogram: do this. Yellow triangle edged in black: hazard ahead. Green square or oblong: escape route or first aid. Red square or oblong: fire kit, such as an extinguisher point. Where a design uses an ISO 7010 symbol, its product page shows the code, such as W014 for forklift trucks, so you can tick it off against your assessment. The safety sign colours and shapes guide explains more.

Materials for safety sign printing

  • 3mm Foamex: rigid PVC foam, light and quick to fix to an indoor wall or door.
  • 3mm Dibond aluminium composite: aluminium skins over a plastic core. It stays flat outside and will not rot or rust.
  • Self-adhesive vinyl: peel and stick onto smooth surfaces like machine guards, glass and doors.

The school, park and community range comes in 3.5mm Correx, 5mm Foamex and 3mm Dibond aluminium composite instead, for outdoor rules boards. Every sign is printed in full colour on one side.

Custom wording and artwork

Every design in our safety sign printing range is ready to go, so there is nothing to upload: pick it, size it, done. Cannot find the exact wording? Ask for a quote with the message and size. If you supply your own sign file, make it 300 dpi at full size with 3 mm bleed and keep text 10 mm inside the edge, as set out in the artwork guidelines. A real person checks every uploaded file for free.

Safety sign printing times and delivery

Each product page shows its own production days, counted in working days from when your order is confirmed. Every sign is made to order and dispatched from the UK. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. See the delivery page.

Safety Signs: questions answered

Is our small business legally required to put up safety signs?

UK rules from 1996 say an employer must provide a safety sign wherever a risk remains that cannot be avoided or properly controlled in other ways. The sign warns about that leftover risk. Your risk assessment shows which signs you need and where they belong.

What are the five kinds of safety sign?

Red circle with a slash: do not. Blue circle: you must. Yellow triangle: take care, hazard. Green square or oblong: the safe way, such as fire exits and first aid. Red square or oblong: where fire equipment is, like extinguishers and call points.

How do I work out what size sign I need?

A rough guide is 1 metre of reading distance for each 25 mm of the sign's shorter side. So A4 reads at around 8 m, A3 about 12, A2 about 17 and A1 about 24. In poor light, or where people move quickly, go one size up.

Which material should a safety sign be printed on?

Inside, on walls and doors, 3mm Foamex or self-adhesive vinyl usually does the job. Outdoors, or anywhere a sign must last for years, pick 3mm Dibond, which keeps flat and will not rot or corrode.

The sign we need is not in your range. Can you make it?

Yes. Send the wording and size through the Get a quote page and we will price it. Custom artwork gets the same free file check by a person as the ready-made designs.

Can the price of a safety sign go up at checkout?

No. The price shown for your chosen design, size and material is the price you pay for the sign at checkout. Delivery is the only extra, listed on its own line, and it is free once the goods come to £100.
