Overview

Postcard printing gets you something small, cheap to post and hard to ignore. Slip one into a parcel and it says thanks. Leave a stack by the till and people take one home. Put a date on it and it ends up stuck to the fridge.

Will anyone write on it?

This question sorts out the card choice quickly.

  • Yes, by hand. Go for 300gsm natural uncoated, 300gsm textured uncoated, 350gsm recycled uncoated or 300gsm brown kraft. No coating means pens and pencils grip. Kraft gives that brown, handmade parcel look a small maker loves.
  • No, it is all about the picture. 250gsm gloss makes photos punchy. 250gsm silk and 350gsm silk have a softer sheen, and 350gsm silk is one of the two heaviest cards on offer.
  • Somewhere in between. 300gsm smooth white card is a clean, sensible all-rounder.

Want the picture side tougher? Add gloss lamination to the front and leave the back plain for writing.

Postcard printing sizes

A6 (105 × 148 mm) is the classic postcard. DL (99 × 210 mm) is long and slim, and fits a DL envelope. A5 (148 × 210 mm) gives room for a menu or a full event line-up. The 148 × 148 mm square stands out in a pile of rectangles. Print the front only, or use both sides for an offer on one and details on the other.

How many to order

Anything from 25 to 2,000. A craft seller might start with 100 thank-you cards; a venue promoting a season of gigs might go for 1,000. The more you order, the less each card costs.

Artwork and dispatch

Send a print-ready PDF at the finished size with 3 mm bleed, design one in the free online designer, or book our paid artwork service. A person checks every uploaded file for free; the artwork guidelines cover bleed and safe margins. Cards are made to order and dispatched from the UK: Express from 2 working days, Standard from 4 and Saver from 6, once your order and artwork are confirmed. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts; see delivery. Folded cards with envelopes sit next to our postcard printing in postcards and greeting cards.

Questions

Quick answers about postcard printing.

I need postcards for a craft fair next week. How long do they take?

Express leaves us from 2 working days after your file has been checked, Standard from 4 and Saver from 6. Delivery to the UK mainland is £7.95, free once your goods reach £100; the Scottish Highlands add £10, and islands and Northern Ireland are quoted.

How do I prepare my artwork for my postcard order?

Set it up as a print-ready PDF at the finished size with 3 mm bleed round every edge, and keep text 3 mm or more inside the trim. Paid help is there too: a clean layout from your text and logo (£15), a design from your brief (£35) or a logo redraw (£30), each with one first draft and two rounds of changes.

Will you tell me if something is wrong with my file?

We will. Every upload for your postcard order is checked by a person for resolution, size and bleed, and you hear from us before anything is printed. Paid help is there too: a clean layout from your text and logo (£15), a design from your brief (£35) or a logo redraw (£30), each with one first draft and two rounds of changes.

What size should I go for?

A6 (105 × 148 mm) is the classic postcard. DL (99 × 210 mm) goes into a DL envelope and is good for price lists, A5 (148 × 210 mm) gives more space, and 148 × 148 mm makes a square card. Each size is priced on this page.

I want to write thank you notes on the postcards. Which card should I pick?

Pick an uncoated card: 300gsm natural, 300gsm textured, 350gsm recycled or 300gsm brown kraft. Pens and pencils glide over those, whereas the coated silk and gloss cards have a slicker surface.

Is gloss lamination a good idea on postcards?

It makes the front shinier, tougher and easy to wipe clean. If you intend to write on the front, though, leave the lamination off.

Could I print a photo on the front and a message on the back?

Yes. When ordering, choose Both sides rather than Front only. That way the front can carry your image and the back a message, an address panel or other details.

Asked by buyers

How cheaply can I get hold of Postcards?

Picked the way the page first loads, with A6 · 105 × 148 mm, 250gsm gloss and front only, Postcards come to £21.15. Any other mix of options, a faster turnaround included, gets its own price the moment you choose it, and that figure is what you pay at checkout. Only delivery is left to add. On its own the opening price of £21.15 would add £7.95 for mainland delivery; reach £100 of goods and that goes to zero.

Which turnaround speeds can I choose for Postcards?

Allow 6 working days on Saver, 4 on Standard or 2 on Express before Postcards are handed to the courier, based on the options the page opens with. Weekends and bank holidays are not counted, and nothing starts until the order is paid and the artwork is confirmed. Pick another size or material and the days beside each speed update, sometimes by a day. After it leaves us, the courier normally delivers in one to three working days and you get the tracking link by email.

Is delivery extra on top of the price of Postcards?

Send it to a UK mainland address for a flat £7.95, or for free when the goods in the basket add up to £100 or more after discounts; artwork and design charges do not count towards that. An order of just this at the opening price of £21.15 is under £100, so it pays the £7.95. We price delivery first for Northern Ireland and for the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, Scilly, the Scottish islands and the Isle of Man; Highland addresses on the mainland just pay £10 extra, one time per order.

Which artwork services are offered with Postcards?

Several routes, all chosen under Artwork on this page. Send your own finished file (no charge), we set your words and logo on a tidy layout, called typesetting (£15), we design it from your brief (£35), we redraw a blurry or low quality logo as sharp vector art (£30) or we create a brand new logo (£50). Typesetting and design from a brief each come with one first draft and two rounds of changes. The fee is the same whatever quantity you order and shows separately in the basket. There is also a free online designer if you want to build it yourself. On its opening option, Postcards leaves us after 6 working days on Saver.

Is the online designer free, and how do I use it?

Pick a starting layout, swap in your own words, logo and pictures, and move things around until it looks right. While you work, the tool flags sample text you forgot to change, small text, items outside the safe area and blurry images, before you can finish. It is free to use and the on-screen watermark does not print. What you see is what we print. Make the artwork for these cards the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

Which is the smallest and which the biggest card I can order here?

The table has 4 sizes. At the small end, A6 (105 × 148 mm) costs from £21.15; at the top, A5 (148 × 210 mm) costs from £23.78. Each figure is for the cheapest set of options at that size. Unsure? Measure where it will go and check the view from the spot people will stand.

Is there a minimum quantity for Postcards?

Yes. You can start at 25, with 50, 100, 250 and 500 as the next steps. Each price is the total for that quantity, so divide it to compare the cost of one item across a few options before deciding. For an amount outside the list, ask for a quote. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each card is made to order for you.

Could the total go up after I reach the checkout?

No surprises: what the page shows for these cards is the goods figure you pay at checkout. Delivery is the one extra, £7.95 to a UK mainland address, and it drops away when the goods reach £100 after discounts. Paid artwork help shows up as its own basket line, so you can check each amount before paying. Sizes for these cards go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A5 (148 × 210 mm), 4 in all.

How much for the biggest size, A5 (148 × 210 mm)?

From £23.78 for 25, with the cheapest settings and the Saver service. Add £7.95 for UK mainland delivery, or nothing at all once the goods reach £100. Select it on the page and swap materials, finishes and speed to watch how the figure moves. Sizes for these cards go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A5 (148 × 210 mm), 4 in all.

How many Postcards can I buy at one time?

Anything from 25 to 2000. The quantity choices on the page run 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000. The figure shown is for the whole batch, not for one, so divide it by the number you picked to see the cost of each. If you need more than 2000, send the size, number and date through our Get a quote page. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each card is made to order for you.

Could you price a 148 × 148 mm card for me?

From £23.78 for 25, with the cheapest settings and the Saver service. Add £7.95 for UK mainland delivery, or nothing at all once the goods reach £100. Select it on the page and swap materials, finishes and speed to watch how the figure moves. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each card is made to order for you.

Our event is close. Can Postcards be rushed?

Yes. Choose Express and Postcards can be on the way in 2 working days on the opening option, for £24.48, where Saver is £21.15 and takes 6 days. Then give the courier one to three working days, and send the artwork with the order, because the clock does not run until the file is sorted. If the date is really tight, message us on the Contact page before paying and we will tell you honestly.

Do you send to Northern Ireland or the islands?

Yes, anywhere in the UK, though the price differs by area. A Highlands postcode on the mainland pays the usual rate plus a single £10 for the order, and that £10 still applies when the rest of the delivery is free. Northern Ireland gets a price worked out first, as do the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, Scilly, the Scottish islands and the Isle of Man: send your postcode through our Get a quote page or the Contact page. We cannot send anything outside the UK. Before delivery, these cards cost from £21.15.

I am not a designer. What if the file I send turns out to be unusable?

That is why a person looks at every upload before anything is printed. Typical snags are a document at the wrong size, missing bleed, blurry photos and words sitting too near the trim. If we spot one, we explain what to change and you send a fresh file. Or hand it over to us: for £15 our typesetting places your wording and logo on a neat layout, with one first draft and two rounds of changes. If you have no file, you can build the design for these cards in our free online designer and check every detail before ordering. Make the artwork for these cards the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

How many pixels does a photo need to print well on these cards?

Close-up items need about 300 dpi at full size. So an A5 (148 × 210 mm) layout wants about 1,748 by 2,480 pixels. Keep lettering and logos as vectors if you can. An image copied off a web page or a social post rarely has enough pixels; if yours looks likely to print soft, our file check flags it. Make the artwork for these cards the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

Can I send a Word or Canva file for Postcards?

Word, PowerPoint and Canva are a fair place to start, but export a high quality PDF from them before uploading. Our first choice is always a PDF at the ordered size with fonts embedded or outlined, followed by AI, EPS or SVG, then high resolution JPG, PNG or TIFF. You can add three files, each up to 25 MB, on this page, or upload them after ordering from the email we send. Make the artwork for these cards the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

Someone else is putting our file together. How does it reach you?

Easiest route: they send the finished file to whoever placed the order, and it gets uploaded after ordering. Up to 3 files of 25 MB each are fine. They can also reach us through the Contact page, as long as they quote your order number so it lands on the right job. Production waits for the checked file, so a late file means a later dispatch date. If you have no file, you can build the design for these cards in our free online designer and check every detail before ordering. Sizes for these cards go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A5 (148 × 210 mm), 4 in all.

Will anyone look at my file before it is printed?

Yes, a real person on our team opens every uploaded file and checks the size, the bleed and the resolution. If something is off, you hear from us before anything is made. Designs made in the online designer are printed exactly as they looked on screen. We print what you send, though, so read the spelling, numbers and dates yourself as well. Making starts when the order and the file are both confirmed. Sizes for these cards go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A5 (148 × 210 mm), 4 in all.

Once I finish designing these cards online, is the file mine to keep?

Two ways. Buy the file on its own: finish your design and pay £9.99 for the print-ready PDF, though you give up the right to cancel as soon as you start downloading it. Or order printing, and a full resolution PDF of the design travels with the order, waiting for you in your confirmation email and under My Account once you have paid. Make the artwork for these cards the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

Card on Postcards: how do the choices differ?

The card option has 8 settings: 300gsm brown kraft, 350gsm recycled uncoated, 300gsm textured uncoated, 300gsm natural uncoated, 300gsm smooth white card, 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card. Card thickness is shown as gsm, the weight in grams of one square metre, and more gsm means a sturdier card. Coated silk card gives crisp print; recycled, textured or uncoated cards have a softer, more natural feel and are nicer to write on. Switch between them on the page and the total updates straight away, so you can see what each one adds.

Can you explain the lamination setting for Postcards?

The lamination option has 2 settings: gloss, front; or none. A laminate is a very thin clear layer sealed over the print. Gloss gives richer, punchier colour; matt takes the shine away so photos and text are easier to read under lights; soft touch feels smooth, almost like velvet. Whichever you pick, the surface copes better with scuffs. Switch between them on the page and the total updates straight away, so you can see what each one adds. For these cards, the material can be 300gsm brown kraft, 350gsm recycled uncoated, 300gsm textured uncoated, 300gsm natural uncoated, 300gsm smooth white card, 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card.

How do I pick the right printed for Postcards?

The printed option has 2 settings: both sides or front only. It sets which sides of the item get printed.

The material choices are 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card. Also in that section: Printed Envelopes and Square Business Cards. Prices begin at £21.15; 4 sizes are listed, starting at A6 (105 × 148 mm); the material choices are 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card. I work with cafes, restaurants and food businesses. Are these cards something we could use?

For kitchens, counters and dining areas, look under Food & Hospitality in the shop: Postcards are listed there. Prices begin at £21.15; 4 sizes are listed, starting at A6 (105 × 148 mm); the material choices are 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card. How would I decide between Invitations and Postcards?

Comparing Postcards with Invitations, this is what changes. Material: 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card on this page, against 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card on the other. Sizes: 4 on this page, the smallest A6 (105 × 148 mm), and 2 on the other, the smallest A6 (105 × 148 mm). Opening price: £21.15 on this page and £25.85 on the other. Go by the spot it is going in and how long it needs to last, then open both pages and compare the live totals.

Should I get Postcards, or would Presentation Folders suit me better?

Set Postcards beside Presentation Folders and a few things differ. Material: 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card on this page, against 400gsm silk card or 350gsm silk card on the other. Opening price: £21.15 on this page and £115.49 on the other. On the Standard service it is 4 working days on this page and 7 on the other. Go by the spot it is going in and how long it needs to last, then open both pages and compare the live totals.

Where do Postcards and Greeting Cards differ?

Set Postcards beside Greeting Cards and a few things differ. Material: 250gsm silk, 250gsm gloss or 350gsm silk card on this page, against 350gsm recycled uncoated, 350gsm silk card or 300gsm greetings card on the other. Sizes: 4 on this page, the smallest A6 (105 × 148 mm), and 5 on the other, the smallest A6 (105 × 148 mm). Opening price: £21.15 on this page and £30.17 on the other. Go by the spot it is going in and how long it needs to last, then open both pages and compare the live totals.

Do I pay delivery on each item in my basket?

No. One delivery charge covers the whole basket, so adding Postcards to other items does not add a second one. It is £7.95 to a UK mainland address and nothing once the goods total £100 after any discount code. Using the same design on two items? Pick the reuse-artwork option on the second one and you pay the artwork fee just once. Each line keeps its own size and quantity.

I have spotted a typo after paying. Can it be fixed?

Tell us quickly through the Contact page, quoting your order number. Before production starts we can take a corrected file, or cancel and refund the whole order. After that it cannot be changed. A print that matches your finished design or the file you sent is not a fault, so it pays to read every word and number before you order. Before delivery, these cards cost from £21.15.

Next year we will want the same card again. Is reordering easy?

Very. Choose the same product with the same options and upload the same file, and it is made again exactly as before. Designed it online? The print PDF from your first paid order stays in My Account and in the confirmation email, so you can reuse it. Before you repeat it, read the wording again: dates, prices, opening times and contact details are the things that go out of date. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each card is made to order for you. Before delivery, these cards cost from £21.15.

Our treasurer needs a receipt for the accounts. What do we get?

Keep the order confirmation email we send: it itemises the purchase and the payment, and works as a plain receipt for your records. The total at checkout for these cards is the goods price on the page plus delivery, so the email matches what left the account. Need something more formal for an audit or a grant claim? Message us from the Contact page with your order number. Sizes for these cards go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A5 (148 × 210 mm), 4 in all.

Can I pay for Postcards by card as a guest?

Yes. Guest checkout is fine, and any debit or credit card works. Stripe processes the payment for us, which keeps your card number off our system entirely. We begin making these cards once the payment has cleared and the artwork is confirmed. Large or out of the ordinary jobs can be quoted first from the Get a quote page. Before delivery, these cards cost from £21.15.

Who looks after me once I have bought Postcards?

FatPrint does, from start to finish. We take your order and payment, a person on our team checks your file, and Postcards are made to order for you rather than taken off a shelf. It then goes to you by courier, with tracking sent by email. Questions before or after ordering go through the box on this page or the Contact page, and a person replies.

I am ordering these cards for a school or charity. Do I need to open an account?

No account is needed. Guest checkout lets a parent, volunteer or club secretary order once and pay by debit or credit card through Stripe. The price you see is the price you pay at checkout, and the confirmation email you receive lists the items and the amount paid for your records. If the committee needs a price agreed before anyone pays, the Get a quote page is the better starting point. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each card is made to order for you. Before delivery, these cards cost from £21.15.

We need a few different designs. Do they each need their own order?

No. Each design goes into the basket as a separate line with its own file or online design, and you pay for them all in one checkout. Delivery is counted once for the whole order and costs nothing when the goods reach £100. If two lines share the same artwork, pick the artwork option that reuses a file already in your basket, so any design fee is only paid once. Sizes for these cards go from A6 (105 × 148 mm) at the small end to A5 (148 × 210 mm), 4 in all.

The parcel turned up damaged. How do I sort it out?

Take photos of the damage and the box it came in, then send them through the contact form within 48 hours of delivery, with your order number. Hold on to the item rather than posting it back; we reply and arrange a reprint or refund. This sits alongside your legal rights, which the returns page covers. Choose Saver and these cards leave us after 6 working days; Express brings that down to 2.

Should I send my file as RGB or CMYK?

CMYK if you can. An RGB file gets converted to CMYK for printing, and vivid greens, blues and oranges may lose a little brightness on the way. Have a Pantone number for your brand colour? Tell us and we match it as near as the material lets us. Expect a small shift between screen and print either way: a screen shines light at you, while printed items reflect it. If you have no file, you can build the design for these cards in our free online designer and check every detail before ordering.

Which mistakes does the online designer warn me about?

Five things: placeholder wording still sitting in the layout, lettering smaller than will print clearly, anything creeping past the safe area or right up to the trim, logos or photos with too few pixels for the size, and shapes lying on top of words. A serious issue has to be sorted before you finish, while a plain warning can be accepted if you are happy with it. Your spelling is not read, so go over names, numbers and dates yourself. Make the artwork for these cards the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).

Can I design these cards first and show the committee before we pay?

You can. Designing online costs nothing until you order, so make a draft, show it to the group and tweak it as often as you like. The on-screen watermark is only there on the preview and is never printed. The designer flags things like small text or low-resolution photos as you go, but it cannot catch a wrong date, so have a second person read it. Make the artwork for these cards the same size as the one you order, such as A6 (105 × 148 mm).
