Heras panel dimensions: tape measure first, banner second

Heras panel dimensions are usually around 3.5 m by 2 m, but hire stock varies. How to measure the frame, leave room for ties and pick a mesh or PVC banner that fits.

Most Heras panel dimensions land close to 3.5 m wide and 2 m tall, or about 11 ft 6 in × 6 ft 7 in. That is a starting point, not a promise. Hire firms and manufacturers all have their own stock, so the only numbers worth ordering from are the ones you take off the fence on your own site with a tape. Do that, knock at least 100 mm off each way, and the banner will sit neatly inside the frame with every eyelet in reach of a tie.

The mistake: ordering from a spec sheet #

It happens all the time. Someone looks up “standard Heras size”, orders a banner to match, then finds the fence on site is a touch narrower, or one panel in the run is an older shorter one. The banner overhangs the uprights, the corner eyelets have nothing to grab, and the ties end up wrapped round the coupler clamps.

“Heras” gets used in the UK for pretty much any temporary mesh panel: welded wire mesh in a steel tube frame, sat in heavy feet, clamped to the next panel with couplers. Within that family you will find:

  • panels a bit narrower or lower than 3.5 × 2 m, depending on who made them;
  • anti-climb panels with a finer mesh, often the same outside size;
  • mixed runs where hire stock from different batches sits side by side.

The feet lift the frame a little, and the couplers take up space on the uprights where two panels meet. Neither changes the panel, but both decide where a tie can go.

Taking Heras panel dimensions on site #

Grab a tape, a pen and, ideally, a second pair of hands. Measure a panel that is standing in the run where the banner will hang, not one leaning against a skip.

  • Width: outside edge of one upright tube to the outside edge of the other.
  • Height: top of the bottom rail to the top of the top rail.
  • Clutter: note where the couplers clamp on, plus any existing signs, lamps or hoarding clips.
  • Public face: decide which side faces the road or footpath. The banner goes there, with the tie heads turned towards the site.

Write everything in millimetres. Then take 100 mm or more off both the width and the height. That gap is what lets each eyelet sit over a tube or the mesh, rather than hanging off the edge. Fences and walls that are not Heras follow the same logic in measuring up for a banner.

A worked example

Say your tape reads 3480 mm across and 1960 mm high. Subtract 100 mm from each and you have room for a banner up to about 3380 × 1860 mm. The full-panel size below, 3300 × 1800 mm, fits with a little to spare. If your panels came out at 3000 mm wide, the full-panel banner would be too long, and the next size down or a custom size banner made to your numbers is the answer.

Here is how our fence banner sizes sit on a panel of roughly 3500 × 2000 mm:

Banner Available in How it looks on the panel
10 ft 10 in × 5 ft 11 in (3300 × 1800 mm) 260gsm mesh, 440gsm PVC, 400gsm PVC-free Fills the frame, roughly 100 mm spare all round
9 ft 10 in × 4 ft 11 in (3000 × 1500 mm) 440gsm PVC, 400gsm PVC-free Big message with some frame showing
6 ft 7 in × 3 ft 3 in (2000 × 1000 mm) 440gsm PVC, 400gsm PVC-free A notice or logo in the middle of the panel

Heras fence mesh banners come in the full-panel size and take 4 working days to dispatch on Express, 6 on Standard and 8 on Saver. Heras fence PVC banners are quicker: 2, 4 or 6 working days on the same three options.

Mesh or solid PVC? #

Size and wind go together. A solid 3300 × 1800 mm banner turns nearly the whole panel into a sail, and a Heras run is only as steady as its feet. That is why mesh is the usual pick for full-panel banners on open, breezy sites: air passes through the holes. Solid PVC is fine for the smaller sizes, sheltered spots and short events, and it gives a slightly crisper print. The trade-offs are laid out in our guide to PVC or mesh banners.

Long runs: one banner per panel #

If you are dressing a whole stretch of fence, order one banner for each panel rather than a single long one across several. Every panel moves on its own when the wind leans on it, and the couplers let the joints flex. A banner bridging a joint gets yanked at the eyelets every time that happens, and that is where tears start.

Count the panels facing the public and order that many. Matching banners also let you play with the run: repeat one message, or spread it along the fence with the company name on one panel, the service on the next and the phone number or web address on the third. The price each on the product page generally drops as the quantity goes up.

Crowd barriers are another animal #

Steel crowd barriers at events are far lower and shorter than Heras, so the numbers above do not apply. Our crowd barrier banners come in 7 ft 3 in × 2 ft 7 in (2200 × 800 mm), 6 ft 7 in × 3 ft 3 in (2000 × 1000 mm) and 7 ft 7 in × 3 ft 3 in (2300 × 1000 mm). Barrier designs differ too, so run the tape over the frame the same way before you choose.

Artwork that survives the hem #

Keep words and logos 50 mm or more inside every edge, so the hems and eyelets never bite into them. People read a fence banner from a moving car or across a road, so less is more: one headline, one supporting line and a phone number or web address. Laying out a 3.3 m banner on a laptop is fiddly; working at 1:10 makes it easier, as explained in 1:10 scale artwork. You can upload a print-ready file, which a person checks for free, or build the banner in the free online designer.

Delivery for panel-sized banners #

The 3300 mm banner is over 3 m on its long side, so it counts as oversize and adds £15 to the order, once, however many you buy. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, and free when the order reaches £100 after discounts (artwork fees not counted). The mainland Highlands add £10, and places such as Northern Ireland and the Scottish islands are quoted. Everything is on the delivery page.

Before you tie anything on #

Whatever your Heras panel dimensions turn out to be, a banner changes how the fence behaves in wind. Ask whoever put the fence up, or hired it to you, whether panels carrying banners need extra feet, ballast or bracing stays. The HSE’s construction pages cover keeping site boundaries safe, and our guide to Heras fence banners covers ties, spacing and the checks to make once it is up.
