Most UK wedding invitations are A6 (105 × 148 mm), A5 (148 × 210 mm) or a 148 mm square. A6 suits a short, classic invite and fits a C6 envelope. A5 gives room for fuller wording, photos and a second venue, and goes in a C5. Square invites look modern and need a 155 mm square envelope.

Are wedding invitations A5 or A6?

Both are correct: A6 is the compact, traditional choice and A5 is the one to pick when you have more to say.

An A6 card holds the essentials comfortably: your names, the date, the time, the venue and an RSVP date. It feels neat in the hand and leaves room in the envelope for a small insert. A5 earns its place when the ceremony and reception are at different venues, when you want a photo on the front, or when the invitation is the main card in a suite with RSVP and information cards tucked behind it. A useful rule: write the wording first, then pick the smallest size where it still breathes.

Size Finished size Artwork with 3 mm bleed Envelope Good for
A6 105 × 148 mm 111 × 154 mm C6 (114 × 162 mm) Classic invites, evening invites, RSVP cards
Square 148 × 148 mm 154 × 154 mm 155 mm square Modern, illustrated or floral designs
A5 148 × 210 mm 154 × 216 mm C5 (162 × 229 mm) Fuller wording, photos, the main card in a suite

Our wedding invitations come in all three sizes. Bleed is the extra background that gets trimmed off; bleed and safe area explains why it matters.

What size are wedding invitations in cm?

An A6 invitation is 10.5 × 14.8 cm, an A5 invitation is 14.8 × 21 cm and a square invitation is 14.8 × 14.8 cm. If a template from a US website says 5 × 7 inches, that is 12.7 × 17.8 cm, which sits between A6 and A5 and will not match UK envelopes, so resize it to one of the sizes above before you order.

What size envelope do you need for wedding invitations?

Match the C envelope to the A card: C6 for A6, C5 for A5, and a 155 mm square envelope for a 148 mm square card.

Each C size is a few millimetres bigger than its A size, so the card slides in without bending. Any inserts need to be the same size as the main card or smaller. For posting, Royal Mail treats anything up to 240 × 165 mm, 5 mm thick and 100 g as a standard Letter, and C6, C5 and 155 mm square envelopes all fit inside those dimensions. Ribbons, wax seals and thick multi-card suites can push the thickness past 5 mm and make it a Large Letter, so weigh and measure one finished invite before buying stamps for all of them.

What are wedding invitations printed on?

Wedding invitations are usually printed on card between 250gsm and 350gsm, which feels substantial without being hard to post.

  • Smooth white or silk card: crisp colour and photos. Add matt lamination for a soft, even finish, or gloss if the design is photo-heavy.
  • Pearl card: a subtle shimmer that catches the light, popular with classic and elegant designs.
  • Recycled uncoated and brown kraft: a natural, rustic feel. Uncoated card takes a fountain pen or fine liner well, which matters if you are handwriting each guest’s name.

Our paper weight guide shows what each gsm feels like in the hand.

Are wedding invitations double sided?

They don’t have to be, but printing both sides is a cheap way to avoid a separate insert.

The front carries the invitation itself. The back can hold the RSVP details, a small map, dress code, timings for the day, or a QR code that opens your wedding website. Fewer separate cards also means a thinner envelope and less chance of tipping into Large Letter postage. If you want guests to reply online, a wedding website with an RSVP form pairs well with a printed invite.

What should wedding invitations include?

A wedding invitation needs to tell guests who is inviting them, to what, when, where, and how to reply.

  1. Who is hosting (the couple, or the couple’s parents in a traditional wording).
  2. Both full names of the couple.
  3. The day, date and year, and the start time.
  4. The ceremony venue with its full address, plus the reception venue if it is different.
  5. An RSVP date and how to reply: an address, an email, or a website.
  6. Optional extras: dress code, whether children are invited, and where to find gift or accommodation details.

Guests invited only to the evening usually get a separate evening invitation with the evening start time, often at A6.

When should wedding invitations be sent?

The usual UK convention is to send invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding, with save the dates going out several months earlier.

Weddings abroad or over a bank holiday weekend tend to go out earlier, because guests need to book travel and time off. Set the RSVP date three or four weeks before the day so you have time to give final numbers to the venue and caterer. Work back from the posting date and leave time for printing and delivery; dispatch times for each speed are shown on the product page and explained in print turnaround times.

Can you print wedding invitations at home?

Yes, for small numbers on a design with a white border, but home printers struggle with the things that make invitations look finished.

Most home printers cannot print colour right to the edge of the card, many will not feed card much heavier than ordinary paper (check the maximum weight in your printer’s manual), and inkjet ink on uncoated card can look slightly soft. Ordering printed invitations makes sense once you want edge-to-edge colour, pearl or kraft card, lamination, or more than a few dozen copies.

Quick answers

What size is an RSVP card? Usually A6 or smaller, so it fits inside the main invitation envelope.

Is A5 too big for a wedding invitation? No. A5 is a common size for a main invitation, especially with photos or two venues.

Do square wedding invitations cost more to post in the UK? Not because of the shape. Royal Mail prices by size, thickness and weight, and a 155 mm square envelope is within standard Letter dimensions.

Why are wedding invitations so expensive? Thick card, small runs and design time all add up. Our prices are shown live on each product page as you choose size, card and quantity.
