Here’s the honest pitch for plumbing and heating labels: the customer won’t remember your name in twelve months, but the boiler will. Leave a label on it with your number and the next due date, and when the service comes round they ring you instead of searching online. Nine labels cover almost every job, and each one is printed with your business name and phone number before it ever reaches the van.
Think of a job in three stops #
Rather than a list of products, follow a normal service or install call. You arrive at the boiler, move on to the cylinder and pipework, and sometimes finish with a problem you have to flag. Each stop has its own label.
Stop one: the boiler
- Boiler Service (96 × 68 mm). Reads “Boiler Serviced”, with lines for the date, when the next one’s due, the engineer and a registration number. Goes on the casing or inside the cupboard door.
- System Inhibitor (96 × 68 mm). Says the system contains inhibitor and the concentration should be checked every year, with lines for the product, date added and next check. Stick it on the boiler, the filter or the manifold. Write the product name in, or have us pre-print it as plain text; we don’t print other brands’ logos.
- Appliance Installed By (96 × 68 mm). For new installs, on the appliance casing or cupboard door, so the owner knows exactly who fitted it.
Stop two: cylinder, heat pump and pipes
- Unvented Cylinder Service (110 × 75 mm). Recommends an annual service and has a line for your card number. That number never changes, so get it pre-printed and never write it again.
- Heat Pump Service (96 × 68 mm). The same idea for air and ground source work, on the indoor unit, the cylinder cupboard or the outdoor unit.
- Isolation Valve (62 × 33 mm or 96 × 45 mm). One blank line, “Isolates”, so the next person knows what each valve shuts off. The small size squeezes into tight runs under sinks and in airing cupboards. Want a set pre-printed as Gas, Hot water and Cold water? Put the list in the extra wording box with a count for each.
- Safety Electrical Connection (96 × 45 mm). Marks earthing and bonding clamps on pipework so nobody unclips them. Electricians use the same label; yours carries your details.
Stop three: something’s wrong, or nobody lives there
- Danger Do Not Use (110 × 75 mm). In big capitals: do not use this appliance. Lines for date, fault, engineer and registration number. It marks the appliance; it is not your written warning notice. On gas work you still follow the unsafe situations procedure you are bound by, and the HSE’s gas safety pages cover the wider duties.
- Empty Property (110 × 75 mm). For drain-downs on empty lets and housing stock: services isolated or drained, with lines for water, gas, electric, date and a contact. Nobody should switch a system back on without calling first, and this tells them so.
Where plumbing and heating labels fail, and how to avoid it #
A label that peels off in a hot loft is worse than none. Plumbing and heating labels spend their lives in warm cupboards, cold garages and sometimes outside on a heat pump, so choose the material for the spot, not the price.
| Material | Write on it with | Best spot |
|---|---|---|
| Matt paper | Biro or permanent pen | Boiler cupboards, anything indoor and dry |
| Gloss paper | Better left fully pre-printed | Labels with no write-on lines |
| Waterproof polypropylene, matt laminate | Permanent marker | Heat pump outdoor units, lofts, garages, damp cupboards |
Paper packs start at 48 labels, or 8 for the 110 × 75 mm size, while polypropylene comes in 250 or 500. The bigger the pack, the less each label costs. More detail in paper or polypropylene labels.
What to pre-print and what to leave blank #
A simple rule: anything that is the same on every job gets printed, anything that changes gets a line.
- Pre-print: business name, phone number, registration or card number as plain text, inhibitor product name if you always use the same one.
- Leave blank: dates, the engineer’s name if you have a team, the fault on a Do Not Use label.
- Type numbers slowly. A typo in your registration number ends up on every label in the pack.
Scheme logos belong to the schemes and are licensed to their members, so we never print them. Your number as text does the same job for the customer.
Off the job: van, paperwork and a bit of marketing #
Not all of it goes on a boiler. A magnetic van sign on 900µ magnetic sheet comes in A2 (420 × 594 mm) and longer panels from 900 × 450 mm to 1000 × 600 mm. Peel it off when you sell the van or lend it out, and there’s no vinyl to strip.
For paperwork, NCR invoice books are A5 with 50 numbered sets, and business cards are the usual 85 × 55 mm. The NCR books take longer to make (12 working days on Saver, 10 on Standard, 9 on Express), so order them before you run out, not after.
When you’re on a big refit, the neighbours are watching. Door hangers and flyers through the doors on the same street, a PVC banner on the scaffold or fence, or a Correx board in the front garden all tell them who’s doing the work. Ask the owner before anything goes up.
