Good gym signs do the talking so your staff don’t have to. The window gets people through the door, a rules board explains how the place works, safety signs cover the wet floors and hot saunas, and a bright label tells everyone the rowing machine is broken before someone climbs on it. None of our products are made only for gyms, but banners, window vinyl, Foamex boards, safety signs, floor stickers and labels between them cover all of it.
Start with the complaints you hear most #
Before you order anything, jot down the five things you or your team say most often in a week. “Put the plates back.” “Wipe the bench.” “You need an induction first.” “The spin class moved.” “That treadmill’s broken.” Every one of those is a sign waiting to happen, and it’s a far better starting list than a catalogue.
Gym signs for the street: getting noticed #
Most small gyms and studios sit in units that look like any other shop. The outside has one job: make it obvious what’s behind the glass.
- The window. Window graphics in matt vinyl, as squares or circles, from 300 mm up to a metre across. Go big with your name and the one thing that sets you apart: open 24 hours, women-only sessions, a free first class. Keep your hours small and at eye level on the door.
- The fascia. A shop sign panel on 5 mm Foamex or 3 mm Dibond, with custom sizes up to 2440 × 1220 mm. If it’s staying outside for years, go Dibond.
- Launch and offer banners. A 440gsm PVC banner such as an 8 ft × 3 ft (2438 × 914 mm) across the front of the unit for opening month or a January push. A We Are Open banner suits a new site or a relaunch.
- The pavement. An A-frame sign with two posters in A2, if the council allows boards on the footway where you are.
Check your lease and local planning rules before anything permanent goes on the outside of the building.
On the gym floor: rules, zones and timetables #
Printed Foamex boards are the simplest way to get the house rules on the wall. Indoor business signs come on 3 mm or 5 mm Foamex, from A4 to A1, and take 3 working days to make on Standard. The thinner 3 mm board is light enough to stick up with double-sided pads, so there’s no drilling into a freshly painted wall.
| Sign | Size that works | Keep it to |
|---|---|---|
| House rules | A2 (420 × 594 mm) | Five or six rules, the ones from your list above |
| Zone markers | 1000 × 500 mm | One word each: Free Weights, Cardio, Functional, Stretch |
| Class timetable | A1 (594 × 841 mm) | Fixed classes only |
| How-to guides | A3 (297 × 420 mm) | Your own step photos next to a rig or machine |
Anything that changes monthly, like cover instructors or a new class, belongs on a cheap poster you can swap, not a rigid board. And ask for a matt laminate on the boards: mirror walls and strip lighting turn gloss into a glare panel.
Floor markers
Floor stickers come in 300 mm and 500 mm squares or circles, or a 1 m circle, with 7 working days on Standard. Use them for a spot per person in a class, a stretch zone, or a “start here” point for inductions. They need a clean, dry, smooth floor. Heavily textured rubber matting isn’t what they’re made for, so try one in a corner first.
Safety gym signs: wet floors, hot rooms and fire exits #
These are the gym signs with legal weight behind them. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 call for a sign wherever a significant risk is left after you’ve done what you can to control it, and your own risk assessment decides where. Our safety signs run from A4 to A1 on 3 mm Foamex, 3 mm Dibond or self-adhesive vinyl.
- Wet and slippery. A Caution Slippery Surface sign by showers and pool sides, and a trip hazard warning where cables or steps catch people out.
- Heat. Hot surface and very hot water warnings near saunas and showers. A mind your head sign for low beams in older buildings.
- Housekeeping. Blue mandatory signs from our mandatory range: clean it after you use it, keep this area clear, mop up spills, report accidents straight away.
- Fire and general. Fire exit arrows, an assembly point sign, a no smoking sign that includes vapes, and a CCTV notice if you record.
No “no food or drink” sign in the range yet. If you need one, a custom Foamex board carries the message.
Changing rooms and toilets #
Steam and daily mopping are hard on signs, so here the material matters more than the design. Our washroom and hygiene signs cover male, female and accessible toilet doors (from 150 × 150 mm), plus hand dryer, drinking water, leave it clean for the next person, and a daily cleaning check sheet. Use vinyl on tiles and cubicle doors in the damp bit; save Foamex or Dibond for the dry corridor outside.
Out of order: labels for kit #
The least glamorous gym signs are often the most useful. A machine with a fault has to be taken out of use in a way nobody can miss.
- Do Not Use / Out of Service labels at 96 × 68 mm or 110 × 75 mm, with lines for the fault, the date and who spotted it.
- Equipment Inspection & Calibration labels at 51 × 25 mm or 62 × 33 mm, to show when each machine was last checked.
- Asset labels to number every item, so your maintenance log and the kit on the floor match up.
Kit gets wiped with spray every day, so pick waterproof polypropylene over paper. Why that matters is explained in paper or polypropylene labels.
Members and open days #
- Membership cards. Plastic business cards at 86 × 54 mm on 570 or 760 micron white PVC. The 760 is the same thickness as a bank card.
- Open days and local events. A roller banner at 850 × 2000 mm for reception or a stand at the summer fair.
- Flyers for letterbox drops and a take-away class timetable.
