Overview

Printed foamex board at FatPrint, in short: foamex is a lightweight PVC foam board with a smooth face that takes full colour print well. It cuts cleanly, drills easily and stays flat, which is why it turns up on so many shop walls and office doors.

Thickness: the choice that matters most

Go thicker as the board gets bigger. A 3mm A4 is fine on a toilet door or a desk. For an A1 menu board or a 700 × 1000 mm wall sign, 5mm keeps it flat. For big pieces up to 1000 × 1000 mm, or anything that stands on its own, 10mm gives a solid, chunky feel.

The finishing options on a printed foamex board

  • Sides: single or double sided. Double suits hanging signs seen from both directions.
  • Lamination: gloss or matt on one side, or none. Matt cuts glare under bright shop lights.
  • Drilling: all four corners, top corners only, or none. Top corners are handy for hanging on hooks or chains.
  • Profile cut: yes or no. Say yes and the board is cut to the shape of your design.

Where they end up

A bakery hangs a double-sided board from the ceiling above the counter with the day's prices. An estate agent puts A2 boards in the window. A dentist screws a 5mm board to the wall with opening hours. A market trader cuts a board in the shape of a coffee cup for the front of the stall. Foamex also works outdoors for a short spell, such as a summer event.

A sign fixed outside a building is an advertisement under the Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) (England) Regulations 2007. Most small business signs are fine without consent, but it is worth asking the council about anything large or on a listed building.

Questions

Quick answers about printed foamex board.

Who handles my Foamex board order?

FatPrint takes the order and a person checks your file before anything is made. Each sign is made to order for you, then sent by courier with tracking. Questions along the way? The question box on this page reaches a person.

What can I choose when ordering a Foamex board?

You can set 12 sizes from A4 (210 × 297 mm) to 1000 × 1000 mm, material (3mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 10mm Foamex), sides printed (single sided or double sided), lamination (gloss one side, none or matt one side), drilling (all corners, no or top corners) and profile cut (no or yes). The price updates with each choice, so you can compare before paying.

What is the turnaround on my Foamex board order?

On Standard it is made and handed to the courier within 3 working days; Express shortens that to 2 working days, Saver stretches it to 5 working days for less. The clock starts once your order is placed and the file is confirmed. Spend £100 on goods (design fees are not counted) and UK mainland delivery is free; otherwise it is £7.95 once.

Which sizes can I get a Foamex board in?

12 sizes, starting at A4 (210 × 297 mm) and going up to 1000 × 1000 mm. Prices start at £20.91 and change with the size you pick.

What is a Foamex board made of?

You can have 3mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 10mm Foamex, with the design printed in full colour. Pick the one that suits where it will be used. It comes in 12 sizes. Prices start at £20.91.

Can I order several signs at once?

Yes. Anything from 1 up to 1,000 is priced on this page. The price per piece usually drops as the number goes up, which helps clubs and shops ordering in bulk. Postage to the UK mainland is £7.95 per basket, not per item, and free when your goods total £100 or more.

Asked by buyers

How cheaply can I get hold of Foamex Boards?

Picked the way the page first loads, with 3mm Foamex, A4 · 210 × 297 mm and single Sided, Foamex Boards come to £20.91. Any other mix of options, a faster turnaround included, gets its own price the moment you choose it, and that figure is what you pay at checkout. Only delivery is left to add. On its own the opening price of £20.91 would add £7.95 for mainland delivery; reach £100 of goods and that goes to zero.

Which turnaround speeds can I choose for Foamex Boards?

Allow 5 working days on Saver, 3 on Standard or 2 on Express before Foamex Boards are handed to the courier, based on the options the page opens with. Weekends and bank holidays are not counted, and nothing starts until the order is paid and the artwork is confirmed. Pick another size or material and the days beside each speed update, sometimes by a day. After it leaves us, the courier normally delivers in one to three working days and you get the tracking link by email.

Is delivery extra on top of the price of Foamex Boards?

Send it to a UK mainland address for a flat £7.95, or for free when the goods in the basket add up to £100 or more after discounts; artwork and design charges do not count towards that. An order of just this at the opening price of £20.91 is under £100, so it pays the £7.95. The very largest sizes go as oversize parcels, adding £15 to the order once. We price delivery first for Northern Ireland and for the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, Scilly, the Scottish islands and the Isle of Man; Highland addresses on the mainland just pay £10 extra, one time per order.

Do the biggest sizes of Foamex Boards cost more to deliver?

A flat £15 is added once per order when it contains an item longer than 3 m on a side (banners) or bigger than A0 (boards), because those need a specialist courier. Here that covers 1000 × 1000 mm. Three of them still pay it once. Smaller sizes travel normally. Delivery anywhere on the UK mainland is £7.95 an order, and it costs nothing once the goods come to £100 or more after any discount code (design and artwork fees are not counted).

Which artwork services are offered with Foamex Boards?

Several routes, all chosen under Artwork on this page. Send your own finished file (no charge), we set your words and logo on a tidy layout, called typesetting (£15), we design it from your brief (£35), we redraw a blurry or low quality logo as sharp vector art (£30) or we create a brand new logo (£50). Typesetting and design from a brief each come with one first draft and two rounds of changes. The fee is the same whatever quantity you order and shows separately in the basket. There is also a free online designer if you want to build it yourself.

Is the online designer free, and how do I use it?

Pick a starting layout, swap in your own words, logo and pictures, and move things around until it looks right. While you work, the tool flags sample text you forgot to change, small text, items outside the safe area and blurry images, before you can finish. It is free to use and the on-screen watermark does not print. What you see is what we print. Make the artwork for these signs the same size as the one you order, such as A4 (210 × 297 mm).

Which sheet material goes into these signs?

You can have Foamex Boards made on 3mm, 5mm or 10mm Foamex. Foamex, a foamed PVC board, is light with a smooth face and best indoors or somewhere sheltered; a thicker sheet stays stiffer at larger sizes. Still torn between two? Type the question into the box on this page and a person will reply.

Which sizes can Foamex Boards be printed in?

The table has 11 sizes. At the small end, A4 (210 × 297 mm) costs from £20.91; at the top, 1000 × 1000 mm costs from £95.30. Need something in between? Type in your own width and height, anywhere from 100 mm to 2440 by 1220 mm. Each figure is for the cheapest set of options at that size. Unsure? Measure where it will go and check the view from the spot people will stand.

Can I leave these signs outside?

Out of doors, the board decides how long Foamex Boards last. Foamex belongs indoors or under cover; out in hot sun and rain it can start to bow over time. Adding the gloss or matt laminate helps the printed face resist scuffs. All print fades gradually in strong sunlight, so if a sign is staying up for a long time, point it away from the midday sun where you can.

How do people usually fix up these signs?

Putting up Foamex Boards takes very little kit. Holes can come ready made: choose all corners or top corners under Drilling when you order. Then screws with washers for a wall, tightened gently. If the wall is smooth and indoors, double-sided foam tape or sticky pads avoid drilling altogether.

I am not a business. Can I buy just one of these signs?

Of course. Anyone can order, with no trade account and no minimum beyond one. Prices for Foamex Boards begin at £20.91, checkout works without an account and you pay by card. Parents, clubs, churches and small shops order single items all the time. On its own the opening price of £20.91 would add £7.95 for mainland delivery; reach £100 of goods and that goes to zero.

And the largest sign, 1000 × 1000 mm: how much is that one?

From £95.30, with the cheapest settings and the Saver service. Add £7.95 for UK mainland delivery, or nothing at all once the goods reach £100. Select it on the page and swap materials, finishes and speed to watch how the figure moves. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each sign is made to order for you.

How many Foamex Boards can I buy at one time?

Anything from 1 to 1000. The quantity choices on the page run 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, and upwards. The figure shown is for the whole batch, not for one, so divide it by the number you picked to see the cost of each. If you need more than 1000, send the size, number and date through our Get a quote page. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each sign is made to order for you.

Could the total go up after I reach the checkout?

No surprises: what the page shows for these signs is the goods figure you pay at checkout. Delivery is the one extra, £7.95 to a UK mainland address, and it drops away when the goods reach £100 after discounts. Paid artwork help shows up as its own basket line, so you can check each amount before paying. Sizes for these signs go from A4 (210 × 297 mm) at the small end to 1000 × 1000 mm, 11 in all.

Could you price an A1 (594 × 841 mm) sign for me?

From £52.80, with the cheapest settings and the Saver service. Add £7.95 for UK mainland delivery, or nothing at all once the goods reach £100. Select it on the page and swap materials, finishes and speed to watch how the figure moves. Before delivery, these signs cost from £20.91.

Our event is close. Can Foamex Boards be rushed?

Yes. Choose Express and Foamex Boards can be on the way in 2 working days on the opening option, for £27.88, where Saver is £20.91 and takes 5 days. Then give the courier one to three working days, and send the artwork with the order, because the clock does not run until the file is sorted. If the date is really tight, message us on the Contact page before paying and we will tell you honestly.

Do you send to Northern Ireland or the islands?

Yes, anywhere in the UK, though the price differs by area. A Highlands postcode on the mainland pays the usual rate plus a single £10 for the order, and that £10 still applies when the rest of the delivery is free. Northern Ireland gets a price worked out first, as do the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, Scilly, the Scottish islands and the Isle of Man: send your postcode through our Get a quote page or the Contact page. We cannot send anything outside the UK. The biggest sizes of these signs go by specialist courier, which adds £15 once to the order.

Can I send a Word or Canva file for Foamex Boards?

Word, PowerPoint and Canva are a fair place to start, but export a high quality PDF from them before uploading. Our first choice is always a PDF at the ordered size with fonts embedded or outlined, followed by AI, EPS or SVG, then high resolution JPG, PNG or TIFF. You can add three files, each up to 25 MB, on this page, or upload them after ordering from the email we send. Make the artwork for these signs the same size as the one you order, such as A4 (210 × 297 mm).

I am not a designer. What if the file I send turns out to be unusable?

That is why a person looks at every upload before anything is printed. Typical snags are a document at the wrong size, missing bleed, blurry photos and words sitting too near the trim. If we spot one, we explain what to change and you send a fresh file. Or hand it over to us: for £15 our typesetting places your wording and logo on a neat layout, with one first draft and two rounds of changes. Sizes for these signs go from A4 (210 × 297 mm) at the small end to 1000 × 1000 mm, 11 in all.

How many pixels does a photo need to print well on these signs?

Big items seen from a distance only need 100 to 150 dpi at full size. So a 1000 × 1000 mm layout wants about 3,937 by 3,937 pixels. Keep lettering and logos as vectors if you can. An image copied off a web page or a social post rarely has enough pixels; if yours looks likely to print soft, our file check flags it.

Will anyone look at my file before it is printed?

Yes, a real person on our team opens every uploaded file and checks the size, the bleed and the resolution. If something is off, you hear from us before anything is made. Designs made in the online designer are printed exactly as they looked on screen. We print what you send, though, so read the spelling, numbers and dates yourself as well. Making starts when the order and the file are both confirmed. If you have no file, you can build the design for these signs in our free online designer and check every detail before ordering.

Someone else is putting our file together. How does it reach you?

Easiest route: they send the finished file to whoever placed the order, and it gets uploaded after ordering. Up to 3 files of 25 MB each are fine. They can also reach us through the Contact page, as long as they quote your order number so it lands on the right job. Production waits for the checked file, so a late file means a later dispatch date. Make the artwork for these signs the same size as the one you order, such as A4 (210 × 297 mm).

Once I finish designing these signs online, is the file mine to keep?

Two ways. Buy the file on its own: finish your design and pay £9.99 for the print-ready PDF, though you give up the right to cancel as soon as you start downloading it. Or order printing, and a full resolution PDF of the design travels with the order, waiting for you in your confirmation email and under My Account once you have paid. Make the artwork for these signs the same size as the one you order, such as A4 (210 × 297 mm).

Is thicker Foamex worth paying for on these signs?

It depends on size and handling. A small notice screwed to an office or classroom wall is fine in 3mm, the lightest option. A bigger board, one on a post, or anything passed around at a meeting is better in 5mm, which flexes less. A board that has to stand by itself, say on a table at a craft fair, wants 10mm. The Foamex options for Foamex Boards are 3mm, 5mm or 10mm.

Can these signs have print on the front and the back?

They can: switch Sides Printed to double sided for Foamex Boards. Two-way printing makes sense for boards seen coming and going, such as one hanging on a fence beside a lane, or pushed into a lawn on a stake. Send two pages, front then back, and tell us if the back is simply a copy of the front.

Which profile cut would you suggest for Foamex Boards?

A profile cut follows the edge of your artwork, so the board ends up shaped like your design rather than a plain oblong. Put a cut line in your file, or tell us and we will add one. For Foamex Boards the list runs yes or no. Try each one on the page: the figure changes as you click, so the cost of every choice is clear.

How do I pick the right lamination for Foamex Boards?

The lamination option has 3 settings: matt (One Side), none or gloss (One Side). A laminate is a very thin clear layer sealed over the print. Gloss gives richer, punchier colour; matt takes the shine away so photos and text are easier to read under lights; soft touch feels smooth, almost like velvet. Whichever you pick, the surface copes better with scuffs. Switch between them on the page and the total updates straight away, so you can see what each one adds. For these signs, the material can be 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex.

Sides Printed on Foamex Boards: how do the choices differ?

The sides printed option has 2 settings: double Sided or single Sided. One side means the design appears on the front only. Two sides puts print on both faces, handy when people approach from either direction, for example a flag on a pole or a sign that faces two ways. Switch between them on the page and the total updates straight away, so you can see what each one adds. For these signs, the material can be 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex.

Does the material option I choose make a difference to Foamex Boards?

It is what your design gets printed onto. For Foamex Boards the list runs 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex. Try each one on the page: the figure changes as you click, so the cost of every choice is clear.

I run a small shop. Would these signs work on the front of it?

A cafe, salon, market stall or corner shop can put these signs to good use out front. Fixed to the fascia or wall with screws, a printed board makes a tidy shop sign. For scale, A1 (594 × 841 mm) is £52.80. Large or lit signs may need advertisement consent from the council, and your landlord may have a say.

We have a school fair coming up. Would these signs be suitable?

Yes. Tie them to railings, a fence or a gazebo, or stand them on an easel. If you are outside and the wind picks up, check the fixings again during the day. Leave time for making and delivery before the date of the fair. For these signs, the material can be 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex.

Could we put these signs up on a building site or around works?

They work on site hoardings and cabins. Whoever puts them up should tie off every fixing point firmly and check again once the wind has been blowing. For these signs, the material can be 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex.

We are putting up a full set of signs at our premises. Which ones sit well next to this one?

A school corridor, a shop floor or a club house rarely needs just one notice. Two that often go up beside this one: A1 Foamex Boards and A2 Foamex Boards. Keep every sign in one board type so the set matches, look up sizes and prices on each page, then check out once: one delivery charge for the whole basket, free over £100 of goods.

Could these signs do the job at a community garden or an allotment gate?

Foamex Boards can do it, if you match the board to how long the sign stays up. Foamex is better kept for inside the shed or the club room. Ask for holes drilled in all corners or top corners and the board arrives ready for cable ties or screws.

Can you explain the drilling setting for Foamex Boards?

With drilling, the corners arrive with holes already made, so the board can go straight up with screws or cable ties and you never need to get the drill out. For Foamex Boards the list runs top corners, no or all corners. Try each one on the page: the figure changes as you click, so the cost of every choice is clear.

How would I decide between A2 Foamex Boards and Foamex Boards?

Comparing Foamex Boards with A2 Foamex Boards, this is what changes. Material: 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex on this page, against 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex on the other. Sizes: 11 on this page, the smallest A4 (210 × 297 mm), and only A2 (420 × 594 mm) on the other. Opening price: £20.91 on this page and £38.14 on the other. On the Standard service it is 3 working days on this page and 6 on the other. Go by the spot it is going in and how long it needs to last, then open both pages and compare the live totals.

Should I get Foamex Boards, or would A3 Foamex Boards suit me better?

Set Foamex Boards beside A3 Foamex Boards and a few things differ. Material: 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex on this page, against 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex on the other. Sizes: 11 on this page, the smallest A4 (210 × 297 mm), and only A3 (297 × 420 mm) on the other. Opening price: £20.91 on this page and £28.04 on the other. Go by the spot it is going in and how long it needs to last, then open both pages and compare the live totals.

Where do Foamex Boards and A1 Foamex Boards differ?

Set Foamex Boards beside A1 Foamex Boards and a few things differ. Material: 10mm Foamex, 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex on this page, against 5mm Foamex or 3mm Foamex on the other. On the Standard service it is 3 working days on this page and 6 on the other. Go by the spot it is going in and how long it needs to last, then open both pages and compare the live totals.

Can I send these signs back if I no longer need them?

If they arrive faulty, damaged or not what you ordered, yes: under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 we reprint or refund. A change of mind is different. Each order is made to your specification, and reg. 28(1)(b) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 takes those goods out of the 14-day right to cancel. Before production starts, though, you can cancel for all your money back. Nothing is printed ahead of time: each sign is made to order for you.

Our treasurer needs a receipt for the accounts. What do we get?

Keep the order confirmation email we send: it itemises the purchase and the payment, and works as a plain receipt for your records. The total at checkout for these signs is the goods price on the page plus delivery, so the email matches what left the account. Need something more formal for an audit or a grant claim? Message us from the Contact page with your order number. Sizes for these signs go from A4 (210 × 297 mm) at the small end to 1000 × 1000 mm, 11 in all.
